Signed, sealed...

THE Melville Oval redevelopment has passed its final hurdle with works set to get underway in July.

The multi-million dollar construction project will be done by Ultrabuild CG, with the contract awarded recently.

The tender, valued at over $7,000,000 opens up the pathway for demolition to start on July 24.

The demolition will include the greenkeeper shed and the current changerooms and undercover bar area, with construction to start in September.

Southern Grampians Shire mayor, David Robertson said Council was thrilled to award the contract for such a significant project to a local contractor.

“We are very happy to be able to award the Melville Oval contract to Ultrabuild, using a local contractor is a commitment to the growth and prosperity of our region,” he said.

“This contract award also includes at least seven local sub-contractors and other local suppliers, which is fantastic for our region and something we’re very proud to support.

“We’re utilising the skills and expertise of our own talented people and in doing so not only stimulating our local economy, but also creating a sense of pride in the community.”

Inflationary pressure has forced some changes to the initial plan though, but Ultrabuild managing director, Ryan Hatherell said it was a coup to keep the building works to local.

“We’re really pleased to be working with Council on this fantastic project which will have a huge benefit to our local community,” he said.

“It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication and expertise of our team and we’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of the region.

“We’ve taken big steps to grow our business and this project will really set us up for success in the future.”

The project includes the renovation and expansion of the heritage grandstand, development of a new pavilion, relocation of the netball courts along with redevelopment of Market Place.

With dates locked in, Hamilton Kangaroos have announced they will relocate from Melville Oval to Dunkeld Recreation Reserve for its final two home games of the season.

All senior football and netball games on a Saturday will be played at Dunkeld on August 12 against Koroit and August 19 against Camperdown.

The Kangaroos’ last home game at Melville Oval is against Portland on July 8, and will be hoping to get back to the Hamilton ground late next season if everything goes to plan.

Works are required to be finished by December 2024 at the latest, meaning the Hamilton and District Cricket Association could be forced from the ground for a season and a half.

The shire has confirmed neither the cricket association or the Kangaroos will be charges user fees while the redevelopment is being carried out.
