PORT Fairy goalkicker, Jason Rowan etched his name into the Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) record books kicking his 1021st goal in the side’s 85-point win over Portland on Saturday.
The previous record had been held by Tony Russell who kicked 1020 goals, lots of those coming in the 1990’s playing for South Warrnambool, Koroit and Port Fairy.
Rowan kicked four on the day, but it was his second goal early in the second term that broke overcame the previous record to give him the all-time goal scoring honours.
The ball was sent inside 50 as Rowan’s direct opponent punched the bouncing ball away, only as far as teammate, Tyson Macilwain who handballed back over his head to Rowan standing alone in the goal square, the rest was history.
On-field celebrations followed as players from all over the ground flocked to him, as well as spectators running onto the field.
The star forward notched up his 1000th goal earlier in the season against Hamilton and will look to continue to lift the goal-kicking record as high as he can this year.
Rowan kicked the majority of his goals for Warrnambool over a long period of time, booting 85 goals for the Blues last season before making a move to Port Fairy in the off-season.
The Seagulls have won their last two games and Rowan sits second on the goal-kicking leaderboard this season with 28 to his name.
