Kangaroos swoop Magpies to cement ladder position

HAMILTON Kangaroos has swooped into Camperdown on Saturday to collect its sixth win of the Hampden Football Netball League 2023 season with a convincing victory, 69-44 that cements its place in the top four.

With the competition having played nine rounds, all teams now turn for home where jockeying for position will be paramount for those teams that are setting up to play finals come September.

With the weather clearing after the deluge the district suffered in the lead up to the game, the players were able to express their skills to the fullest.

The Roos sprang a surprise before the game by naming Madsie Phillips to play, after the defender had been missing from the line up since sustaining an injury back in round five.

Phillips was eased back into the action with court time of two quarters, and she slipped back into her role at WD as if she hadn’t been away.

In an even first term the sides traded goals with each centre pass, but the visitors were able to claim a two-goal gap at the sound of the siren as a vital turnover in the back court resulted in the Roos goaling from the possession.

The margin was extended to 10 goals at the long break as the Kangaroos backs applied even more pressure to the Magpies and the ball was turned over seemingly at will.

When the teams returned to the court for the second half the visitors took their game to higher standard as the players turned the last two quarters into a training drill by adding a further 42 goals and only allowed their hosts another 17.

Ella Sevior, Clare Crawford and Emma Sommerville were named as Hamilton Kangaroos best players as they dominated their opponents for four quarters, while Danielle Van Kalken and Hayley Sherlock were on target in the goal circle.

The Kangaroos return to Pedrina Park this Saturday as they host North Warrnambool Eagles and victory will open a two-game gap on the ladder.

Division 1

HAMILTON Kangaroos conducted a training drill against Camperdown at Leura Oval on Saturday as the division one team ran away with the game, 74-26 as Kyra McKinnis, Indiana Ryan and Michayla McRae controlled the style and pace of the Kangaroos game plan.

Division 2

Bec Sherlock, Tamara Milne and Maddie Rhook were the star performers for the Hamilton Kangaroos division two team as they accounted for Camperdown 59-18 to retain top spot on the ladder, equal on points with Terang-Mortlake and Portland in what is the most evenly contested grade in the HFNL.

Division 3

THE division three Hamilton Kangaroos suffered a shock loss to Camperdown on Saturday with the high-flying Roos losing their top spot on the ladder with a 23-35 defeat at the hands of the seventh placed Magpies.

Despite the defeat Mimi Chun, Joe McKew and Holly Rook all played well but the Magpies were just too good on the day.
