Kangaroos to face Eagles challenge

COMING off their first win of the year, the Hamilton Kangaroos will look to put up a strong fight against the North Warrnambool Eagles at Melville Oval, as the Round 10 action of the Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) seniors gets underway.

The Eagles were too strong when the sides matched up in the first game of the season at Bushfield Recreation Reserve, but Hamilton will be out for revenge on its home deck.

North Warrnambool has been one of the sides to beat so far this season and sits in third spot on the ladder with a 6-3 record, while the Roos are 1-8.

Coach, Hamish Waldron is hoping his side can continue on from its impressive performance last week to take its opportunities again in front of goal.

“It is (a good challenge), especially on our home deck, we played some good footy against them down there when we played them in round one, so hopefully the boys can serve up another good effort after last week,” he told The Spectator.

“Obviously the last three or four weeks our form has been building and hopefully we can implement it into Saturday’s effort against North.”

Waldron spoke about the likely key match-up between Eagles’ forward, Nick Rodda and Mick McMeel as one to watch, with both players determined to play a vital role for their sides.

“We’re probably going to give Mick McMeel first crack at him … we might run Bailey Baker with Jett Bermingham in the midfield and see how we go from there,” he said.

Ben Marti, Angus Kissel and James Pike will be inclusions to the side while Jack Hickey is out with concussion, along with other outs, Luke Barnes and Flynn Jamieson.

Waldron said the belief within the group has started to grow in recent weeks which has been reflected in the way the side is playing and expects them to battle hard with the wet forecast today.

“They’re as hungry as ever and have been the whole season, that belief is starting to come into them a little bit the last few weeks,” he said.

“Looks like it’s going to be wet, so it will be a bit of a slog and an arm-wrestle, probably a bit of a metreage game, so hopefully my boys are ready for the challenge if it is wet.

“It’s just going to be the side that adapts to it the quickest, that’s what usually happens.”
