Under-18.5s keep finals dream alive

PORTLAND’S under-18.5 outfit produced a dominant performance against Terang-Mortlake, running out 17.20 (122) to 0.1 (1) victors.

The Tigers were unstoppable from the outset, kicking five goals in the first quarter and six goals in the last to produce the comfortable victory.

Their best players on the day were Kostya Vallance, Marcus Zeunert, Charlie Piergrosse, Jed Lucas, Jake Tunstall and Lachlan Compton.

The win means the Tigers remain in seventh place with four rounds to go, but with just four points separating them from fourth-placed North Warrnambool Eagles (who they play this weekend), their finals aspirations remain well and truly alive.

Their coach Cam Brown said the side is laser-focused on that goal, adding it might well come down to the final round of the season.

“It’s something we’ve talked about, we have a round 18 clash with South Warrnambool which may decide our season,” Brown said.

“I’ve just told the boys that we need to get ourselves in there, and from then on the season starts again and we go from there come finals.”

The key issue facing Portland may well be percentage, as both the Eagles and fifth-placed Cobden have extremely strong percentages in the mid to high 160s, while the Tigers’ is currently 130.53.

Still, with a month of footy left to play there’s no reason for the side to let up now.
