Roos bound up to fourth as Seagulls grounded

HAMILTON Kangaroos has bounded into fourth spot on the Hampden Football Netball League Open netball ladder after thrashing Port Fairy sat Gardens Oval on Saturday, 64-13.

With North Warrnambool being no match for Cobden, the Roos took advantage to climb back up the ladder with an excellent performance away from home and without its full squad as the Roos went into the game with only eight players.

The first quarter set the tone for the game as the visitors gained a jump on Port Fairy by putting 21 on the scoreboard but only allowed the Seagulls a paltry three in reply.

With Danielle Van Kalken missing from under the hoop for this game, Clare Crawford stepped into her role as GS and it was if nothing had changed as Crawford took every opportunity to score.

Combining well with GA Hayley Sherlock the pair had 31 goals between them by halftime and the game was effectively over as the Roos defence was miserly in keeping the home side to only six goals by the long break.

As with all good teams, the Kangaroos scored more goals in the second half than they did in the first as the final score finished at 64-13 with Crawford and Sherlock dominating in the goal circle but it was teenager Madsie Phillips at GK who claimed the best on court plaudits with one her best performances of the season.

Kellie Sommerville made a triumphant return to the team after being away for an extended break with work, as she too was named as Hamilton’s best alongside Phillips.

Hamilton kangaroos now must seek to do what no other team has been able to this season and knock off South Warrnambool next week.
