Roos fail to stop Seagulls

HAMILTON Kangaroos failed to halt the winning form of Port Fairy at Gardens Oval on Saturday, as the visitors went down 7.9 (51) – 17.9 (111) despite coming into the game full of confidence.

The Kangaroos failed to carry forth their winning form from the game against Portland the previous week as a slow start in the first term saw the visitors have to play catch up football for the entire game.

Having six shots on goal to the Seagulls four in the first term for only a return of six behinds meant that the Kangaroos failed to convert their greater possession rate for the opening quarter and Port Fairy made the visitors pay.

The home side rattled on a further six majors in the second quarter to claim a 32-point lead at the long break as the visitors failed to kick a goal until the second quarter.

When the teams returned for the premiership quarter, the game became an even contest as Port Fairy added another 4.1 while the Kangaroos replied with three gaols straight.

From there though the game was never in doubt as the Seagulls ran away with the final term to open a 10-goal lead which is where it stayed until the final siren.

Ethan Knight is playing his best football with his second game in succession being named the Roos best, but he couldn’t inspire his team to come with him despite the best efforts of Zach Burgess, Cameron Whyte, Brad Thomas, Taine Morris and Deacon White in support.

With key forwards Darcy Russell and Hamish Cook held to a single major each, the task was always going to be tough for the Roos, but the side must find other avenues to goal when the situation occurs in future.

Reserves

HAMILTON Kangaroos and Port Fairy pitched a great battle for the points on offer in the reserves with the visitors coming out on top, 5.7 (37) to 1.10 (16) with the low scoring due to great defensive work from both teams.

The second half saw the Kangaroos use the ball better when they had shots on goal by kicking 4.3 to 0.6 as Jason Hawker, Hugh Douglas, Lachie Urquhart, Harry McGinley, Jordy Anthony and Kane Taylor were the pick of the Kangaroos but in such a dour contest, the whole team performed their individual roles well.

Under-18.5’s

SCORING was tough at Gardens Oval on Saturday, as the Kangaroos posted a win in the Under-18.5’s with a scoreline of 5.6 (36) to 1.7 (13) as the back lines dominated at both ends of the ground.
