Kangaroos drop out of top five

DESPITE recording a 16-goal second term, Hamilton Kangaroos has fallen out of the Hampden Football netball League top five after losing to Warrnambool, 39-46, at Reid Oval on Saturday.

The Roos have lost their last two games to drop out of the five and the squad must find their lost form to reach the finals in September with three rounds remaining in the season.

The visitors fell behind in the first quarter, as Warrnambool gained a jump by putting 14 goals on the scoreboard by the buzzer to end the term with the Roos being kept to only eight.

Returning to the court, the Roos were determined to get back into the game with midcourt players getting the ball to Hayley Sherlock and Danielle Van Kalken in the goal circle.

At half time, the visitors had closed the gap to a single goal and looked likely to run over the top of the Warrnambool team, but an injury to Sherlock changed the dynamic of the Roos’ game plan with Clare Crawford moving to GA during the third quarter.

The change shouldn’t have caused that much disruption, but Crawford gives great drive to the team in the mid-court and that takes time to replace.

In the end the visitors couldn’t maintain that second quarter resurgence and fell short by six goals with Madsie Phillips, Ella Sevior and Emma Sommerville named the Kangaroos’ best.
