IT’S preliminary final day in the Hampden Football Netball League, and Hamilton Kangaroos supporters will be cheering on its division one side as it battles Koroit today at Reid Oval for the right to oppose Cobden in next weekend’s grand final.
The Saints are not going to lay down for the Kangaroos as they have defeated Hamilton in all three meetings to date this season, but the last encounter was by a single goal in the qualifying final only two weeks ago.
The Roos fell just short of time in that qualifying final as the side reduced the margin to that single goal with only seconds remaining on the clock, which meant the team couldn’t produce the match-tying goal in the time remaining.
The momentum gained from that last game will be used today as motivation when the two teams line up again with the scoreboard reading 0-0, with each team desperate to earn the remaining grand final spot.
The Kangaroos carried momentum from the last game against the Saints into its game with Portland last weekend as they delivered an emphatic performance against the Tigers to record a strong 13-goal victory, 46-33.
Koroit had a vastly different outcome against Cobden as the Saints lost by 10 goals. 35-45 to the Bombers which is not great form coming into a knockout game.
Hamilton has winners across the court starting with Kyra McInnis and Grace Cleaver in the centre who will drop back and help defenders Amanda Douglas, Jess Crane and Rhianne Lewis, but who are also equally adept when the ball switches to the attacking end of the court where they will assist Stephanie Holcombe in getting the ball to goalers Michayla McRae and Kelsey Lewis.
The Roos will have to earn a spot in the big dance as Koroit will not lay down and hand them victory, but if they work as a unit and gain turnover ball then the shooters should give the side an advantage that hopefully will equate to a lead on the scoreboard come the final siren.
