Division 2 look to win premiership from third place

THE third placed Hamilton Kangaroos will take on the fifth placed Koroit Saints in the Division 2 Hampden League grand final on Saturday at Reid Oval.

Despite finishing higher on the ladder then Koroit the Roos failed to beat the Saints this season (in round 7 they lost by 4 goals and in round 16 they lost by a goal) but Hamilton had the week off last week to freshen up and get ready to prepare for this Saturday.

Hamilton Kangaroos Division 2 coach, Bec Sherlock said the girls worked really to end up finishing third winning their last game of the season to enable them to have the second chance in finals.

“We have built momentum through that result as well as finals, but Koroit have always been a tough opponent for us – they play a very physical game and deserve to be there on grand final day,” she said.

“The top five in Division 2 was very tight and there wasn’t much difference between first and fifth.

“We did get a bit of rest last week, but we had an extra training session last week to make sure we were getting some run in our legs and trained Monday and Thursday this week.

“We respect the Koroit players, but we will go in and play our game plan and hopefully win the match and all seven who take the court for the first quarter will needing to ready to go.”

The Roos will hope Bailey Ryan will be at her best in Goalkeeper and coach Bec Sherlock will also hope to lead from the front and be on target and shoot some early goals to get Hamilton off to a good start.

Koroit will be hoping that they can win back-to-back premierships after they defeated Port Fairy last year.

DIV 3

HAMILTON Kangaroos FNC division three netball team will hoping to finish its season off on a high note in the Hampden League grand final against Terang-Mortlake at Reid Oval on Saturday.

The Roos will be looking to end their dominant season where they only lost the one game to the sixth placed Camperdown with their first Division 3 premiership since 2019.

Earlier in the year in round 8 the Roos and the Bloods drew but the Hamilton got a hold of Terang-Mortlake in the last game of the home and away season where they won comfortably winning 52-27.

In this game Saskia Gould dominated shooting 48 out of Hamilton’s 52 goals and also outscoring the Bloods by herself.

Hamilton Kangaroos co-netball director Bec Sherlock said Division 3 team has recently had a comfortable win against Terang-Mortlake as well as a draw early in the season and they did prove themselves against Port Fairy, but those results won’t factor into the Roos weekend.

“Division 2 and 3 played a practice match on Monday night and trained again on Thursday to be well-prepared for the contest against the Bloods on Saturday,” he said.

“Division 3 have had a super successful year and have young girls in their side, and it would be amazing if they could get the win on the weekend and finish the year off on a real high.

“Saskia Gould shot 48 goals against Terang-Mortlake last time and our defence turning over the ball and giving our attackers the opportunity to score off turnover will also be really important as well.

“We as a team will be sticking to the game plan that has worked well for us for the entirety of the season.”

Terang-Mortlake will be looking to create history and win their first ever Hampden League Division 3 premiership.

The game begins at 9:00AM on court 2 at Reid Oval.

13-and-Under

TODAY the Hamilton Kangaroos will be aiming to win the Hampden Football Netball League 13-and-Under grand final against Koroit at Reid Oval and will be full of confidence after beating the Saints in the semi-final two weeks ago.

Kangaroos coach Nat O’Dea said that in the semi-final two weeks ago, “it was the best game the group has played as a team.”

“It didn’t bother me having the week off, as we had a practice match against the 15-and-Under team but it’s nice to know the girls will be fresh especially with school holidays, they didn’t have the distraction of school so they will be very fresh to go Saturday,” she said.

“We have the league best and fairest and co-captain, Molly Sevior, and she was outstanding in the semi against Koroit, and she is one that I push, but she has excelled (as) she lifts every time I have asked her to, and she is pivotal in goal attack and her connection with Lucy Jennings is great.

“Ruby Spong is amazing, she has the ability to just run all day and the other co-captain, Maddox Ryan has the ability to bring the ball down and play in front of her opponents she gets so many turnovers and that is one of the reasons we won the other week.

“There is only one girl that has played in a grand final and for a team that didn’t play finals last year it’s a massive achievement.”

The game is being played at Reid Oval on court two beginning at 10:00AM.
