Competitive effort from Open side

THE Hamilton Kangaroos were eyeing off a first victory of the HFNL Open season against Terang-Mortlake but fell short by nine goals at Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The home side got off to a strong start, putting up 11 goals in the first quarter to go into the first break leading by five goals.

An 18 goals to 10 term saw the Bloods grab the lead in the second term, but the blue and white remained in the contest at the main break.

Terang-Mortlake continued to pile on the goals in the second half, eventually winning, 51-42.

Kellie Sommerville, Clare Crawford and Mimi Chun were the Roos’ best, with Crawford finishing the round six clash with 26 goals.

Senior divisions

THE Kangaroos continued their stunning Division 1 season, defeating Terang-Mortlake by seven goals, 39-32.

A strong first half set up the victory, leading by eight goals at the main break.

Amanda Douglas, Chloe Riddle and Bailey Ryan were standouts for the home side, with Kelsey Lewis finishing with 31 goals.

Division 2 saw the blue and white fall just short of victory, going down 37-41.

The home side trailed at every break, but kept the margin within reach, with Tahlia Ross (19 goals) and Molly Sevior (18 goals) sharing the scoring load.

Ross, Maddison Rhook and Phoebe Dunn impressed for the home side.

Division 3 saw Hamilton collect another victory, winning 39-21 in a dominant display.

Mia Spong, Karen Spong and Skye Kissel impressed for the Roos, with Lily Raymond finishing the game with 26 goals.

Juniors

THE 17-and-Under Kangaroos were unable to get over the top of Terang-Mortlake, losing 22-39.

Bridget Mailes (12 goals), Lexie Smith (seven goals) and Phoebe Dunn (three goals) all contributed.

The 15-and-Under clash was the closest of the day, with the Kangaroos winning by the narrowest of margins, 27-26.

Holly Rook, Maddox Ryan and Saskia Gould all impressed, with the latter putting up 20 goals.

Hamilton’s 15-and-Under Reserves team fell just short of the Bloods, going down 25-29.

Shannon Mhasho, Olivia Munro and Lily Raymond were standouts for the home side, with Raymond putting up 16 goals.

The 13-and-Under clash ended in the biggest margin of the day, with Hamilton winning 50-6.

Ava Kinnealy netted 27 goals, to be the team’s best alongside Emily Iredell and Sydney Smith.

Hamilton also won the 13-and-Under Reserves clash, 37-10, thanks to 23 goals from Willow Colliton.

Evie Milne, Imogen Penny and Willow Manson also impressed.

Football

INACCURACY cost the Hamilton Kangaroos any chance of an upset win against Terang-Mortlake, going down by 52 points at Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Hampden Football Netball League round six clash saw the third-placed Bloods burst out of the blocks, kicking five goals straight to the Roos’ three behinds.

By half time, the home side had kicked 1.5 to Terang-Mortlake’s 7.2, with a lot of work ahead of the blue and white to reel in the deficit in the second half.

After the main break, the Bloods’ dominance continued, as did the Kangaroos’ inaccuracy.

Hamilton kicked another five behinds, to go with its three goals in the second half, while the visitors added six goals to their tally, to win, 13.8 (86) to 4.10 (34).

Will Povey continued his strong form for the Kangaroos, named the team’s best, while Noah Herrmann and Rory Gill also impressed.

Hamish Cook bagged two goals, while Brady Hicks and Deacon White finished with one major each.

The loss leaves Hamilton equal on points with Port Fairy and Camperdown, but with the worst percentage of the group with two wins.

Reserves

THE Hamilton Kangaroos reserves also struggled against the visiting Terang-Mortlake, going down by 70 points.

Hamilton fell behind on the scoreboard early on, managing just one behind in the opening term, as the visitors pushed out to a 21-point lead at the first break.

The margin remained the same at the end of the first half, before the Bloods kicked away after the main break.

The home side couldn’t match the output, scoring on goal in the second half to Terang-Mortlake’s nine, as the Roos went down, 4.3 (27) to 15.7 (97).

Oscar Linke and Hugh Douglas were the Roos’ best, while Jordy Anthony kicked three goals for the home side, supported by Harry Turnham who finished with one major for the game.

Under-18

THE Under-18 Kangaroos continued their unbeaten start to the season, accounting for Terang-Mortlake by 81 points at Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The home side dominated from the outset, kicking four goals in the first term, before extending the margin out to lead by 42 points at the main break.

The form continued on, as the Kangaroos went on to win, 12.15 (87) to 1.0 (6).

Angus Kissel and Eddie McShane were standouts for the winners, with the latter kicking seven majors to guide the Kangaroos to victory.
