Hamilton looking to bring the intensity

Position: Ninth

Season record: 2-7

Most goals: Darcy Russell (16 goals)

HAMILTON Kangaroos sit in ninth position at the halfway point of the Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) senior football competition with a 2-7 season record.

The blue and white started the season well sitting at 2-2 after the first four rounds before losing five straight games.

The two wins were triumphant as the side easily accounted for Camperdown in round two running away to win the game by an impressive 39-point margin, the side followed it up two weeks later against bottom-placed Portand.

The Kangaroos came out against the Tigers and put them to the sword, dominating them from the opening whistle and securing a 10-goal victory.

The blue and white have had an up-and-down month or so coming into the bye round, they lost disappointingly to Port Fairy after leading at half time, before bouncing back against Koroit the following week – a performance where they deserved the win but were ran over in the last term by six points.

The most disappointing loss was the most recent against Warrnambool, which was 120 points at the final siren, but no doubt the Roos will be looking to put that game behind them and recover in a big clash against Cobden next week.

The Kangaroos went 2-16 last year so they are on track to build from that and put a few more wins on the board in the second half of the year.

Coach, Brad Thomas has seen the side play glimpses and quarters of some high-level football and will be working on bringing tackling pressure and intensity for four quarters.

Darcy Russell has only played four games but leads the club goal kicking with 16 to his name, two bags of four and seven against Portland.

Ethan Knight and Jack English have been among the side’s most consistent midfielders getting plenty of the ball and providing some grunt in the contest through clearances and tackles.

While Harry McGinley (five times in best) and Will Povey (four times in best) have also impressed as defensive-minded players.

Hamish Cook has battled hard in the forward line with 13 goals with some assistance recently from Hugh Douglas.

It’s about bringing the pressure and intensity from the start and sustaining it, the side can win the games against similar sides and potentially upset top sides if they do this.

The HFNL have a league bye this weekend with the exception of South Warrnambool and Warrnambool with the clubs arranging to play their round 14 game today at Reid Oval.
