MDFL gets underway with mixed fortunes for locals

INACCURACY has cost Penshurst any chance of victory in its Mininera and District Football League (MDFL) opening round clash against the Ararat Eagles on Saturday.

The Bombers were at home, but it was the visitors who got the jump with a four-goal opening term.

It could have been worse with Ararat kicking seven behinds, while Penshurst could only manage two behinds.

The home side bounced back in the second term, going into the main break trailing by four goals.

Ararat’s third term was its best, kicking six majors and increasing the scoreboard advantage, despite the Bombers’ best efforts.

It was a tough final term with Penshurst adding just four behinds to its score, going down, 4.12 (36) to 17.18 (120).

Jacob Mibus topped Penshurst’s goal tally with two, while Jayden Watson made an immediate impression, leading by example across the ground.

Aiden Graveson kicked six goals for Ararat, while Naish McRoberts added five in support.

Ben Robertson was named Ararat’s best.

Hawkesdale-Macarthur d. Moyston-Willaura

HAWKESDALE-MACARTHUR got off to the ideal start, travelling to Willaura and returning with a win against the Pumas.

A six-goal opening quarter set the tone for the visitors, as Moyston-Willaura managed just one major to go into the first break trailing by 33 points.

The dominance continued into the second quarter, as the Pumas had no answer for the visitors’ transition.

Four more goals were added to Hawkesdale-Macarthur’s tally, as the Eagles went into half time leading, 71-38.

The home side did its best to combat the Eagles’ attack, but a seven-goal final term ensured the visitors got their first win of the season at the earliest possible chance.

Lachie Glare was the hero up forward, kicking nine goals, while Andrew McCartney bagged three.

Ollie Wortley was named the Eagles’s best.

Sam Pilgrim and Jayden White-Powell were the main threats up forward for the Pumas with three majors each.

Tatyoon d. Glenthompson-Dunkeld

THE Hawks don’t often lose on their home ground and Glenthompson-Dunkeld travelled there but returned empty-handed.

The Rams were unable to register a score in the first quarter, as Tatyoon kicked 4.7 to lead by 31 points at the first break.

The visitors got on the board in the second term with two majors, but Tatyoon equalled the output, as the half time margin was unchanged from the first break.

The Hawks got rolling in the second half though and kicked six goals to four to claim a 12.14 (86) to 6.6 (42) victory.

Tyler Fehsler kicked two majors for the Rams, while Andrew Lowe was named the team’s best.

Ben Clay finished with five goals for the Hawks, with Anthony Rosato impressing for the brown and gold in the opening game of the season.

Wickliffe-Lake Bolac d. Caramut

WICKLIFFE-LAKE BOLAC got off to a winning start in 2022, accounting for Caramut by 126 points at Lake Bolac to open its campaign.

The Magpies dominated proceedings in the round one clash, kicking seven goals to one, with the Swans unable to match the home team around the ground.

There was still improvement left in the Magpies though, as they piled on nine goals in the second quarter to go into half time leading, 105-20.

The Swans put up a brave fight but had no answer to what the home side dished up, with Wickliffe-Lake Bolac going on to record a 26.17 (173) to 7.5 (47) win.

Sean Trevaskis was the standout up forward for the winners, kicking seven majors, while Jake Smith added five goals in support.

Joe Kenna kicked three for the red and white.

Matthew Petherick was named Caramut’s best, while Charles Vallance was the best Magpie.

Lismore-Derrinallum d. Woorndoo-Mortlake

THE Demons started the new season with a win, travelling to Woorndoo and defeating the Tigers by 33 points.

A six-goal final term set up the win for the visitors, after the match looked set to go down to the wire early on.

Neither team dominated proceedings early, as both sides made the most of their chances in front of goal with the home side edging clear by a goal at the first break.

The visitors bounced back with four goals to two in the second term to grab the lead late in the quarter and go into half time ahead by five points.

The third term was a grind for both teams and Woorndoo-Mortlake narrowed the deficit to just two points at the final change.

From there, the Demons grabbed control and went on to win, 14.7 (91) to 8.10 (58).

Michael Lockyer kicked four majors for the visitors, while Lachlan Isbister and Will Langley kicked three; Liam Rigby was named Lismore-Derrinallum’s best player.

Jesse Horan and Joshua Mahncke were the Tigers’ only multiple goal kickers with two each, with Will Templeton named the team’s best.

SMW Rovers d. Great Western

GREAT Western’s minor premiership defence has got off to a tough start, falling short of SMW Rovers by 84 points at Mininera.

It was a tight contest between the two sides early on with the home side edging clear to lead by 11 points at the first break.

The Lions could only manage one goal in the second term, as the Bulldogs ran rampant and added three majors to go into the half time break leading by four goals.

It was the second half when the home side got rolling, as Great Western conceded six goals in the third quarter and was held to just one behind to put the result beyond doubt with a quarter still to play.

SMW Rovers continued to create chances in front of goal and went on to win, 17.14 (116) to 4.8 (32).

David Box kicked four majors and was named the Bulldogs’ best player, while Zane Bedford and James Costigan chipped in with three majors each.

The Lions’ scoring was spread evenly with no multiple goal kickers, while Nigel Sibson was named Great Western’s best.
