PENSHURST capped off its stunning Mininera and District Football League (MDFL) Under-16.5 season with a comfortable 93-point win against Caramut in Saturday’s grand final at Glenthompson.
Bombers skipper, Henry Bensch, led from the front with a 10-goal haul to ensure his team collected the junior premiership.
The red and black controlled the contest from the outset and led by 14 points at quarter time, with the Swans held to just one behind in the second term, as Penshurst piled on five goals to go into the long break leading by 46 points.
The Swans were able to hold the Bombers to two goals in the third term, as conditions also made scoring difficult.
Despite Caramut’s best efforts, Penshurst finished the game 16.11 (107) to 2.2 (14) winners, amid a flurry of yellow cards which were handed out late in the game.
Bensch kicked a game-high 10 goals to claim the VCFL Medal, while Penshurst teammate, Noah Cameron, was named best on ground.
Mark Lehmann was Caramut’s best player in the season decider, while Thomas O’Sullivan kicked the Swans’ only two goals of the game.
Penshurst coach, Lachie Watt, was ecstatic to see his team claim the win and credited the team’s focus during the game.
“We were nervous, you never know what can happen on grand final day,” he said.
“We prepared as best as we could and we knew our best would be good enough, so we were happy to deliver that.
“They were matching us for the first quarter to a certain degree and we built up the momentum as the game went on.”
Watt also singled out his captain, who led from the front each game and provided strong leadership when necessary.
The Bombers coach said Bensch’s hard work was rewarded with his strong performance in his final junior game.
“He is fantastic, the boys love him,” Watt said.
“He has been playing Under-16s from a very young age and a lot of hard work has gone into today.
“For him to kick 10 goals, it is a brilliant way for him to finish off his junior career at Penshurst.”
