Bombers continue impressive win streak

PENSHURST continues to dominate opponents each week, with the Bombers smashing Moyston-Willaura by 278 points in Mininera and District Football League round 13 action on Saturday.

The Bombers were at home and wasted little time getting the scoreboard ticking over, kicking nine goals from 17 scoring shots, while keeping the Pumas scoreless at the other end.

The visitors were unable to swing the momentum in the second term, kicking their only goal for the game, while the red and black added another six goals to the scoreboard to go into the main break leading by 103 points.

Penshurst’s pressure continued in the second half, and continued to score at will, stretching the margin out to over 170 points at the final change, despite some inaccuracy at times.

The home side finished strong, winning 42.33 (285) to 1.1 (7) to guarantee a top two finish to the home and away season.

Jock Barrie was named the Bombers’ standout, while Elijah Satala topped the scoring with 11 majors for the winners.

HAWKESDALE-MACARTHUR kept its top three chances alive with a strong performance, defeating Woorndoo-Mortlake by 74 points at Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve.

The Eagles dominated the Tigers from early in the contest, kicking four goals to two in the first term, before extending the margin out to 33 points by the main break.

Woorndoo-Mortlake was unable to reel in the deficit in the second half, as Hawkesdale-Macarthur went on to win, 16.12 (108) to 5.4 (34).

Alexander White topped the Eagles’ scoring with four majors, while Theo Opperman was named the team’s best on ground.

Glenthompson-Dunkeld is officially out of finals contention after the Rams fell to Lismore-Derrinallum by 10 points.

The Rams had equal scoring chances at Lismore Recreation Reserve, but inaccuracy cost the visitors, as they struggled to restrict the Demons’ transition at times.

Just one point separated the two teams at half time, before the home side went on to win, 8.9 (57) to 6.11 (47).

Jezza Woods kicked two goals for Glenthompson-Dunkeld, while playing-coach, Tom Water, led from the front.

Tatyoon and Caramut faced off at Tatyoon Recreation Reserve, with the Hawks inflicting another heavy defeat on the Swans, winning 32.16 (208) to 2.5 (17).

The Hawks need to keep winning to have any chance of pushing into finals contention, and Saturday’s result also gives the team an increase in percentage as well.

Caramut trailed by 78 points at half time, with the margin pushed out in the second half.

Marcus Darmody kicked 18 goals for the Hawks in a best on ground performance, while Phil Edwards and Scott Judd were the Swans’ goal kickers, with Nathan Murphy the team’s best player.

Wickliffe-Lake Bolac defeated SMW Rovers to retain top spot, with the Magpies doing it easily in the end, 13.16 (94) to 2.2 (14).

Ararat Eagles got the better of Great Western to finish round 13 in fifth position.

The Lions were unable to match their rivals on the field, going down, 9.11 (65) to 22.16 (148).

Tom Taurau bagged seven majors for the winners, while Naish McRoberts added five goals in support.

Netball

THE Mininera and District Netball Association A grade finalists are still not all locked in, with both fifth-placed Glenthompson-Dunkeld and sixth-placed Penshurst winning their round 13 games on Saturday.

Just one win separates the two teams, with the Bombers holding a percentage advantage over the Rams.

Glenthompson-Dunkeld got the better of Lismore-Derrinallum at Lismore, winning 35-27.

It was a tight first quarter, with the visitors edging clear to lead 10-8 at quarter time.

A 10 goals to five second term saw the Rams go into half time full of confidence.

A strong second half ensured Glenthompson-Dunkeld got the points, leading by eight goals at the final whistle.

Jane Robertson once again led the Rams’ scoring efforts, putting up 25 goals to guide the side to an eighth win of the season.

Other games

PENSHURST remains hot on the Rams’ heels on the ladder after a 43-34 victory against Moyston-Willaura.

The Bombers were at home and made it uncomfortable for the Pumas from early in the contest, but the visitors were determined to keep the margin within reach, going into quarter time trailing by just one goal.

Moyston-Willaura then started to drop off, trailing by six goals at half time and eight goals at the final change of ends.

The home side finished strongly, recording a nine-goal win, thanks to 30 goals from Katherine Rentsch.

Hawkesdale-Macarthur went down to Woorndoo-Mortlake by 13 goals in their clash at Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve.

The Eagles started positively, matching the Tigers on the court and took a one-goal lead into the first change of ends.

Woorndoo-Mortlake responded and grabbed the momentum, going into half time leading by three goals.

Hawkesdale-Macarthur wasn’t able to match the visitors in the second half, managing just five goals in the third term to the Tigers’ 13.

The 11-goal three quarter time margin stretched out to a 38-25 Tigers victory.

Olivia Twaddle put up 16 goals for the home side.

Ararat Eagles continue to notch up strong performances, easily accounting for Great Western at Central Park.

The Lions were outclassed from the start in the 15-54 loss to Ararat, posting just one goal in the opening quarter and trailing by 20 by the main break.

The second half was a similar story, as Ararat showed why it sits pretty in top spot with less than a month until finals.

SMW Rovers notched up a fifth win of the season when they held off Wickliffe-Lake Bolac at Mininera Recreation Reserve, 56-37.

The Magpies went into the game as heavy underdogs, and the home side wasted little time applying strong pressure and collecting the points in front of a home crowd.

Tatyoon made light work of Caramut in the final game of the round, winning 58-26.

The Swans were gallant in defeat though, trailing by just five goals at the first change of ends, before the margin blew out to 14 by half time.

Caramut continued to fall further back on the scoreboard in the second half, despite the best efforts of Hayley Mann, who finished the game with 17 goals.
