Westerns unveils new First Nations-inspired design

WESTERNS Football Netball Club will be showcasing a new look during tomorrow’s South West District Football Netball League fixtures, with the club unveiling its new Indigenous design.

The Roos’ newest jumpers and dresses were designed by club member Aaron Bamblett and have arrived and been unveiled in time for the tall end of NAIDOC week.

Bamblett explained the symbolism behind each component of the designs that will be worn by both footballers and netballers, with the overall message of the design being unity within the club.

“The outer white lines and larger kangaroo paw prints represent the senior football and netball players guiding the smaller paw prints in the middle, the junior players,” he said.

“The circles on the jumper represent our hunting grounds, the places we travel to together to play our sport.

“And the movement of all the kangaroo prints up the jumper signifies us moving together unified as a club.”

Bamblett said he was proud of how the design had turned out when the final product was delivered, and equally pleased with how the idea was initially received by the club.

“I initially reached out to Clarkston (Ray) and (club president) Vicki (Clayton) with my idea, and they immediately jumped on board,” he said.

“We waited to go ahead with the plan until this season when we were back at our home ground to unveil it.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone run out there (tomorrow) wearing the design, it will be a super proud moment I reckon.

“I’ve been happy to see the club be so willing to get on board and help make this idea that I had become a reality.”

Clayton said the club as a whole was proud to have gotten behind the initiative, and that she was pleased to have found such an opportune time to showcase the new design.

“What better occasion to show our new design than at the tail end of NAIDOC week in the South West District (FNL’s) first ever Indigenous round,” she said.

“I think it’s even more special to have the design coming from a member of our club and it will make the moment even more special.

“As a club we’re all about celebrating diversity and recognising the traditional owners of the land, so we’re very proud to have this design as part of our club.”
