Back to back? Kangaroos set for season decider against South Warrnambool

THE Hamilton Kangaroos will be hoping history repeats when they take to Reid Oval in tomorrow’s Western Victoria Female Football League grand final against South Warrnambool.

The Kangaroos go in as heavy underdogs, having lost to the Roosters both times they have faced off this season, but it was a similar form line going into last year’s season decider, having not beaten the Horsham Demons during the season, before running away with the premiership by two goals.

The blue and white lost by 29 points to South Warrnambool in round three, followed by a round eight loss by 21 points.

With a full squad to select from, Kangaroos coach, Pat Sherlock said both teams would have changed since the last encounter and was backing his team to be up for the fight.

“We have improved and I expect they have as well,” he said.

“We have a fit squad to pick from, just few sore bodies at end of the season.

“We have been playing a bit of footy, in finals it is always important to get games under your belt.

“We were underdogs last year and same again this year with South, but it is just the belief in the group that on the day if we put our best foot forward, we could well get the job done.”

With the forecast supposed to be clear and the wide open expanses of Reid Oval able to be utilised, the Kangaroos will be hoping for an open and fast game to keep the ball moving.

“The weather is supposed to be ok down there, should be perfect for this time of year for footy,” Sherlock said.

“So, it will be about the skills and we will have to put plenty of pressure on the kicker.

“Just like every other game recently, I will just tell them to look for the first contest then the nerves will settle after that.”

Emily Pitts will once again lead the girls out as skipper, and will provide valuable experience to the group, having notched up her 50th club game earlier this season.

“She is one who has played the most for us, she is young but has played plenty of footy,” he said.

“We have got a fair few midfielders going through the team, so a few will rest up forward at times, so they will be pretty busy and the load will be shared across the ground.

“It will be more just controlling their style of play and make them go to where we want to play on the field.”

With South Warrnambool finishing the season on top of the ladder without a blemish to its record, it will not be an easy task for the Kangaroos though, with the game getting underway at 2pm.

The women are not the only Roos team in finals action though, as the Under-14 and Under-16 football teams take to Bushfield Oval tomorrow in the hopes of keeping their season alive.

The 13-and-Under Reserve netball team will also be in action in a day of sudden death finals for each of the teams.
