Under-15s flying high

PORTLAND’S under-15 girls football team has gone from strength to strength this season, dropping just one of their first seven games thus far.

The girls, who play in the Western Victorian Female Football League, have been performing extremely well defeating allcomers except for a juggernaut North Warrnambool Eagles opponent which is undefeated with a percentage of over 2000.

“It’s been fantastic, the girls have shown a heap of endeavour and a desire to learn across the season so far,” their coach Darren Jacobson said.

Coming in as a new coach, Jacobson said he was excited to see how the girls would progress as the season has developed.

“We’ve started being able to introduce a game plan and a structure to how the girls are playing, and the skill-level is picking up constantly, and they’re coming up against some good competition and beating them so we’re really happy with where we’re sitting at the moment,” he said.

“All the basic skills like your kicking, marking and handballing, they’ve all improved massively over the course of the season.

“A lot of them were quite patchy at the start of the season, but their skills are starting to get more and more consistent as the season has progressed.

“The biggest improvement I want to see out of the girls is them hitting targets more consistently over these next few weeks before finals, if we can start doing that we’ll be in good shape.”

Portland’s next challenge will take place this evening as they host Koroit at Hanlon Park, with the game set to get underway at 6pm.
