WITH one round of the Western Victoria Female Football League 2024 home and away season to play, teams are jostling for ladder position to ensure they play their preferred opposition come finals.
Reigning premiers, Hamilton Kangaroos enjoyed a week off to recover fully from any little niggling injuries as Warrnambool Blues forfeited the game on Sunday, thereby stopping the Kangaroos from increasing their percentage as no doubt they would have thrashed the Blues and possibly risen to or above Horsham on the ladder into second spot.
Horsham d Cavendish
CAVENDISH made the road trip to City Oval in Horsham to battle the Horsham Demons, but the Bloods were no match for the home side as they went down, 28.14 (182) to 0.0 (0).
With the club having held its ball the night before the game, there was a few missing players for this game for Cavendish, but those that did make the trip made sure the opposition earnt their victory despite the scoreline.
The Demons had the game won after the first quarter with seven majors on the board to a clean slate from the Bloods and so it was in the second term as Horsham rammed home 16 goals for the first half to have triple figures on the scoreboard by halftime.
When the teams returned to the ground for the second half, Cavendish were still hard at the ball and the players kept Horsham to only another 12 goals in a good effort for a team well beaten.
Nicole Adamson, Bella Meulendyks, Victoria Faulkner, Kirra Schultz, Amanda Busuttil, and Abbey Wilson were named as the Bloods best, with Meulendyks earning her seventh award from as many games to be the Bloods best player.
Horsham was well served by its twin towers up front as Shannon Cross (six) and Ellie Treloar (four) added to their league leading goal kicking tallies.
Sunday Cavendish has the chance to end its season on a high when they travel to Reid Oval to battle Warrnambool Blues, the only team they have defeated this season, while Horsham is away to Tyrendarra and Hamilton Kangaroos have the road trip to Friendlies Society Park to play ladder leaders South Warrnambool.
Under-18
Cavendish d Horsham Demons
WHILE the Cavendish seniors couldn’t come to terms with the wide-open spaces of City Oval, the Under-18 team had no such problems as it took care of business against Horsham Demons, 11.10 (76) to 4.2 (26).
It was a pleasing display from the Bloods who welcomed back Maddison Cotten from Ballarat Rebels duties and she kicked a lazy four goals to be the best goal kicker on the ground.
In a tight first term the Bloods only kicked one major while keeping the home side scoreless, but the visitors added four more goals in the second quarter as they took control of the game to lead by 26 points at the main break.
Cavendish added a further six majors in the second half to run away with the game by 50 points as Leayla Pohl, Matilda Brook, Ava Murrihy, Matilda Mason, Maddison Cotten, and Milly Thomas were judges to be best on ground for the Bloods.
Cavendish sit third on the ladder and they will play finals, but they have one more home and away game against Terang-Mortlake on the road to end their home and away season and if they win that game, they will play the same opponent in the semifinal.
Under-15
Hamilton Kangaroos d Port Fairy Seagulls
HAMILTON KANGAROOS secured a solid victory and a possible third place finish heading in finals by defeating Port Fairy Seagulls, 6.11 (47) to 3.4 (21) at Pedrina Park on Sunday.
After a tense opening quarter, the home side held a narrow eight-point lead at the first change of ends, but from then on the Roos built on the foundation they laid in the first quarter to extend its lead at every break until the final siren sounded with the lead out to 26 points.
Tatum Bell, Eloise Millard, Ruby Cleaver, Georgia Brown, Annie Cleaver, and Anika Pohl were the Blue and White’s best player’s while Tayla Sherlock slotted home three majors to be the highest goal kicker on the ground.
In their last home and away game for the season, the Roos travel to South Warrnambool and are favourites to win the game and possibly finishing as high as third on the ladder depending on other results, but they will play finals no matter the outcome.
