THE Portland Golf Club’s annual club championships will be decided on today.
Six matches will be played across the grades, with play beginning off the first tee from 9am – and the feature matches to be played from 9.28am (women) and 9.35am (men).
The finalists have progressed to the big day after winning quarter-finals and semifinals back on March 6, having earlier been ranked after qualifying rounds.
The Open ladies’ championship final will be contested by Ellen Zeunert and Jill Treloar.
That match-up is the same as last year’s play-off, which Treloar won on the very last hole.
In fact, these two players have won plenty of championships between them with Treloar also winning in 2014, while Zeunert already has seven titles in her bag – 1999, 2007, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
The Open men’s championship will see Jayden McLeod, chasing his first title, up against 10-time champion – and defending title holder – Clint Foster.
McLeod took care of Ken Banks in the quarter-final and then Mark Smail in the semi, while Foster had to get past Andrew Sing and then Ben Cumming. Foster first won the title in 2001, and had further victories in 2003, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021. B grade men’s finalist Tom Bibby was able to defeat Trevor Meade and Tim Albert in the early finals, while his opponent Richard Clark was too strong for Lee Gibbins and then Dennis Heaphy.
Phil Hay got to the C grade men’s final by beating Robert Morley and Lachlan Stephens, while Glenn Anderson defeated Norm Smith and Liam Hol.
The minor grade ladies’ finals see Lou Armistead and Trish Florakx contesting B grade, while Helen Snibson will be aiming for back-to-back C grade titles when she plays Liz Kennedy.
