WITH March and daylight saving rapidly coming to a close, we now enter what the golf purists call the serious season of competition.
Parklands Golf Club’s opening day is on Saturday and the course continues to show improvement due to the great work achieved by our volunteer workers.
Our club is grateful for all the hours put in by these members and others.
The committee has decided, after a trial of two holes, to use light hydraulic oil on all of our scrapes.
This should encourage more visitors to play our beautiful course.
Saturday Canadian foursomes
AGAIN, the golf gods blessed us with a perfect day for walking the fairways, the occasional round spoiled by having to actually hit a little white ball.
The winners were Barry Oldaker and Vince O’Brien with a nett 67 5/8 to finish ahead of runners-up, Peter and Sue Irvin with 69 3/4.
Third place went to George Donaldson and Steve Nattrass with 70 1/4.
Nearest the pins went to Bruce Taylor on the second, Mark Miller on the third, Oldaker claimed the honours on the fifth and 11th, Graeme Torney on the 13th and Nattrass took the honours on the 15th.
Longest putts on the first and 17th went to Nattrass, with Stewart Turner taking the 16th and Taylor the 18th.
Longest, straightest drive on ninth for men was won by O’Brien and for the ladies honour went to Heather Wilkinson.
Friday nine-hole stableford
THERE was a tight tussle at the top of the table, resulting in a seven-way countback.
Captain Barry had the task of separating the players score cards to decide on a winner with Miller eventually claiming the overall honour ahead of Bernie Cook and Phil Kosch with the three players all recording 17 points.
Wednesday 13-hole stableford
IN very pleasant conditions a good field took to the fairways for the midweek event.
Stewart Turner was the winner with 30 points, finishing one clear of runner-up, Bill Evans.
Third went to Peter Irvin on a countback from Heather Wilkinson after both collected 28 points.
Nearest the pins went to Turner on the second, Alex Walter on the fifth and Lee Petch on the 13th.
Longest putt on the first went to Heather Wilkinson, and the birdies and ferrets prize went to Marie Cook.
Monday four club stableford
ON a typical autumn day that started in fog and ended in bright sunshine, the ladies enjoyed the challenge of playing with four clubs.
Going by the results, some players may be better off staying with the four clubs.
Heather Hay topped the leaderboard with a fabulous 41 points, two points clear of runner-up, Irene Box.
Nearest the pin went to Sue Irvin on the 15th, while the longest putts went to Heather Wilkinson on the first, Gaye Goggin on the 17th and Hay collected the honour on the 18th.
The longest, straightest drive on ninth was won by Box.
Birdies and ferrets went to Marie Cook.
This week
THE main event this week is our opening day on Saturday, which will be a three-person ambrose.
It will be a noon start for 12.30pm hit off. All visitors very welcome.
Good luck to our ladies pennant team who commenced their rounds yesterday.
May every ball you hit fly straight down the fairway and fall into the cup.
