IT was a day to remember for Louise Patterson last Friday, sinking a hole in one during her first round at the Hamilton Golf Club.
Patterson was playing in the Rural Challenge alongside teammates, Bill Crawford, Simon Smith and Pete Cameron, when she found the cup with her tee shot on the par three sixth hole.
The casual golfer said she had the biggest shock when she realised it went in the hole.
“I would never have expected it in a million years,” she said.
“I am only a hack really and we were playing in a fundraiser for the golf club and this hole was really nerve racking
“It was a sponsored hole and basically I was just trying not to stuff it up in front of everyone and I just gave it a good whack and as soon as I hit it, Michael Holcombe who plays here said it will be a hole in one, then my cousin, Simon, said it was a hole in one then it probably only sank in when Michael ran at me with two hands up for high fives.”
It was the first time Patterson had played the Hamilton course, usually taking to the Grampians fairways for her rounds of golf.
An umbrella helped improve her swing in the lead-up, with Patterson crediting it for straightening her swing for the event.
“My swing was so bad the week before that I told my dad I couldn’t swing properly and so I got an umbrella out and did that alongside the woolshed,” she said.
“I am just really glad I did it on a day when people were watching, because if I had of done it practicing, nobody would have believed me.
“I am still on a bit of a high, it is the ultimate golf goal.
“I have family bragging rights this year, but my dad has had two hole in ones overall, so I can’t possibly stop trying until I catch up to him.”
