Parklander candour

PARKLANDS Golf Club ladies now have their own definition of endurance - being able to play an 18-hole round of golf on five consecutive days without appearing to tire.

I might add this includes some travelling outside of Hamilton and pertains to one lady member only, no names.

Saturday

PLAYED in windy conditions, the men took to the fairways to compete both for the Monthly Medal, but also for a promising start to their championship rounds.

The men’s championship will be played over four consecutive Monthly Medal rounds and will result in a scratch champion and a handicap champion.

Barry Oldaker topped the leaderboard to claim the Monthly Medal with 69 nett, while the voucher winner was Les Pye with 70 nett from James Brown on a countback from George Donaldson after both returned with 71 nett.

Nearest the pins went to Barry Elvery on the second, Bruce Taylor on the fifth, Brown on the 11th and Pye on the 13th.

Longest putts were won by Kelly Hitchcock on the first, Stewart Turner on the 16th, Donaldson on the 17th and Mark Miller on the 18th.

The birdies and ferrets and putting were won by Brown.

The scratch championship leader after round one is Brown and Oldaker leads the handicap section.

Friday

PLAYED over the original nine-hole course, Oldaker again showed some form with a nett 29, followed by Bernie Cook with 33 ½ on a countback from David Rendell.

Nearest the pin on the13th went to Rendell and Donaldson had the longest putt on the first.

Wednesday

SENIORITY was the name of the game, as players contested a 13-hole stableford round in pleasant weather.

Bill Evans came out the winner on a tight leader board with 27 points, including a well-crafted birdie on the second, played from some way out.

Oldaker was runner-up with 26 points and Cook rounded out third place on 25.

Nearest the pin went to Evans on the 13th and Miller on the 15th.

Alex Walter took out the longest putt on the first along with the birdies and ferrets.

Tuesday

TWO Men joined the ladies to play the stableford event on an absolutely perfect autumn day and on a course that continues to improve from day to day.

Miller topped the standings with 39 points, ahead of runner-up, Mary McCallum, four points adrift.

Nearest the pin went to Miller on the second, Gaye Goggin on the fifth, while the eighth and 13th went to Brown, with Marie Cook landing closest on the 15th.

Longest putts went to Goggin on the first and 17th and Marg Donehue on the 18th.

Birdies and ferrets went to McCallum.

Monday

ROUND five was played at Coleraine and the ladies had a 3 and 2 win over Hamilton 2.

The Division 4 Final between Parklands and Hamilton 2 was scheduled for yesterday, along with the other Pennant Finals, at Hamilton Golf Club.

This week

THE main event for this week will be our Anti-Cancer Day, which is a stableford Round with the ladies playing for the Cathy Winnell Trophy.

The day is open to both ladies and men with proceeds go to the Cancer Council of Victoria.

Please try and wear some yellow if you can.
