Parklander candour

IT was a quiet week of mid-winter competition golf, whereas the team at Parklands Golf Club have been anything but quiet.

Parklands is hosting the 2022 Victorian Sand Green Championship on the August 27 and 28, and preparations are in full swing.

Groundworks to ensure the course is presented in the best possible condition for the championships commenced during the enforced break in play during the initial covid lockdown in 2020.

The dedicated grounds team commenced a program of re-grassing around all the scrapes and remediation of bare patches that were present in some fairways.

Throughout 2022 there has been a concerted campaign to trim up the trees in the rough, which has certainly assisted those who have strayed from the fairways.

This week saw the installation of impressive new signs on the tee blocks and outside the club house, as the club awaits delivery of new tee block markers.

Parklands will be hosting the Western Districts Golf Association (WDGA) 2022 Sand Green Championships concurrently with the Victorian Championship.

The WDGA Championships are open only to eligible members of WDGA clubs and will be decided on scores recorded during the second round of the Victorian Championship.

Parklands encourages all eligible WDGA members to enter, which is done via the Golf Australia website.

Those who are considering playing in the championships, or those who have not played at Parklands for a while are encouraged to play a round to experience the recent improvements at the course.

An ideal opportunity is during Parklands’ annual four-person ambrose on Sunday.

Cost is $80 per team with an 11.30am start for 12pm tee-off time.

There will be scratch and handicap prizes plus novelty prizes.

Visitors are always welcome to join our regular competitions on Saturday from 12pm for 12.30pm tee-off.

Next week’s Saturday competition is a par format.

Wednesday

WEDNESDAY’S 12-hole stableford was the only competition held this week.

Stewart Turner won the day with 24 points from Mark Miller on 23, who beat Peter Irvin in a countback.

The novelty prizes were shared around with the nearest the pin prizes going to Miller on the second, Bob Warburton on the 13th and Turner on the 15th.

John Wilkinson had the longest putt on the first and Alex Walter won the birdies and ferrets prize.
