IT seemed like the weather cleared just in time for an enjoyable Saturday afternoon of golf which was a Pinehurst teams competition.
The pinehurst format has both golfers in a team drive the ball, then they switch balls and play each other’s second shot.
After each player has taken his second shot, the team then decides which of the two balls they want to continue playing.
Once they have chosen the shot, the player whose second shot was not chosen takes the third shot.
They then play alternate shot until the hole is complete with stroke scores recorded.
As with any teams format of golf, the results can be enjoyable or frustrating but generally entertaining.
The winners were Barry Oldaker and Mark Miller with a nett 71 3/4, who won on a countback from their bitterly disappointed Bruce Taylor and Stewart Turner.
In third place were Peter Irvin and Vincent O’Brien with a nett 73 1/8.
The nearest the pins were shared between Peter Irvin (second), Turner (third), Miller (fifth), Taylor (eighth), Alec Walter (13th) and Vincent O’Brien (15th).
The longest putts went to Bernie Cook (first), Irvin (16th), Taylor (17th) and Turner (18th).
Turner’s productive afternoon was topped off with the birdies and ferrets prize.
Friday
THE in-form Peter Irvin continued his winning streak with a score of 32 and a half to win the nine-hole stroke event from Marie Cook, who returned with 36 and a half.
Irvin also claimed two of the novelties including nearest the pin on the second and the longest Putt on the first.
Cook claimed nearest the pin on the 13th and the longest straightest drive was won by Marie Cook.
Fortunately, all players finished their round before the rain started.
Wednesday
A FEW players ventured out to conquer the front nine plus holes 10,13,14 and 18, but not all withstood the wind and rain to finish the 13 holes and return a full card after the stableford event.
The clear winner for the day was Irvin with 25 points, well ahead of Taylor on 21 points.
The nearest the pin prizes went to Irvin (second) and Taylor (fifth & 13th).
Cook claimed the longest putt on the first and the birdies and ferrets prize was won by George Donaldson.
