Parklander Candour

SUNDAY was a day for celebration at the Parklands Golf Club, with past and present members gathering to celebrate our 50th anniversary and presentation day.

Amid much chatter and laughter over a delightful lunch, there were many stories told and catching up among old players.

We were delighted to welcome life member, Ian Parsons, back for a visit and to reminisce about his time at the club.

We also welcomed Tim Roberts, son of past life member, Jim Roberts.

Ian spoke briefly about his time at the club and some of its history, with guests perusing the memorabilia on display.

The cake, made by club member, Kelly Hitchcock, was cut by Ian and Tim and enjoyed by all present.

Presentations followed with club champions, ladies champion Irene Box, handicap champion Marie Cook, and men’s handicap champion Barry Oldaker.

Men’s champion, James Brown, was an apology for the event.

Saturday

ON a day that went from rain to sunshine to storms, a group of players managed to play 16 holes before the storm made them head for the 19th hole.

The event a two-person Ambrose was won by Oldaker and Peter Irvin with a nett 55 3/4, ahead of Ron Oakley and Dale Grambeau on 59 3/4.

Nearest the pins went to Oakley on the fifth, Steve Nattrass on the eighth, and Grambeau on the 13th and 15th.

George Donaldson sunk the longest putt on the first and Irvin drove long and straight on the ninth.

Birdies and ferrets was awarded to Nattrass.

Friday

WITH the fairways cut and surprisingly drying out a little, the summer competition was played and it was a stroke event over the back nine.

Scores varied with the winning score of the day going to Barry Oldaker with a nett 36, followed up by Irvin with a nett 36.5 and Bruce Taylor on 38.5.

Taylor was nearest the pin on the 15th and Irvin sunk the longest putt on the first.

Birdies and ferrets went to Gaye Goggin.

Wednesday

A SMALL number of keen golfers took to the heavy course to play a stableford round over 12 holes.

Exhibiting his fine winter golf prowess was Stewart Turner, returning with a neat 20 points.

Runner-up was Donaldson with 18 points from Oldaker on 14.

Bruce Taylor took out nearest the pin on the 13th, and the longest putt on the first went to Irvin.

Wet weather again prevailed on Monday, so no competition yet again.

This week

THE volunteer workers are travelling to Mt Gambier on Friday for their annual trip away.

They plan to play 18 holes, followed by lunch; we wish them well.

Saturday will be a stableford round, with noon start for 12.30pm tee off.
