Hegarty and Wombwell take Memorial

CASTERTON Golf Club stalwarts, Pat Hegarty and Neville Wombwell have taken home the first trophies in a week of competition for the club.

The annual Bill Ballantyne Memorial Day finally hit-off on Saturday, after a wet course during the year saw the event postponed.

The club has been playing this memorial day since 1989 and it is a 4 ball-better-ball stroke round for men and women.

The winners of the men’s section were Pat Hegarty and Neville Wombwell with a nett score of 62, while Sandra McGann and Marion Cowland were tops for the women’s section, with nett 67.

Runners-up trophies went to Garry Carlin and David Rhook in the men’s, with nett 65, on a countback from Ken Dancey and Kim Killeen, also with nett 65.

Nearest the pins went to Ian Thompson on the 2nd and Jesse Smith on the 17th, while Sandra McGann had a stellar day on the green, taking NTPs on the 8th, 13th and 17th.

Second shot in the 9th went to Ian Thompson.

Wednesday

YVONNE Rees took out the first round of the summer competition last Wednesday, winning the Jill Crozier 11-holes competition with nett 42 ½.

Second was Sandra McGann with 43 and third was Denise Newell with 46 2/3.

Winner of the putting was Yvonne Rees with 17 putts.

Sandra McGann also collected another win, taking out the 18-holes event with 94-1-73, while Marion Cowland and Yvonne Rees were runners-up with nett 76.

Nearest the pins went to Denise Newell on the 8th, Yvonne Rees on the 13th and Sandra McGann on the 17th.
