Parklander candour

PARKLANDS Golf Club’s hole reversal project is a significant step closer to reality with the installation of reticulation for the scrape surrounds on the new seventh and eighth scrapes.

The reversal project essentially reverses the direction of play on the two holes and once complete, the current eighth will become the new par three seventh and the current seventh will become the new par four eighth.

This alteration to the course will substantially improve the flow of play either side of the holes.

The imminent completion of this project has been made possible by the expenditure of many hours of volunteer labour from friends and members of club, and the key support of generous, community-minded local businesses.

The Reversal Sub-committee is hopeful that the new configuration will be operating during the coming season that begins in April.

Saturday

A SIZEABLE field of players took to the fairways for Saturday’s par outing in an event described as match-play between a player and the course itself.

Sue Irvin’s excellent +5 secured her victory, and a handicap deduction from the Golflink handicapping system.

Alex Walter and Allan Flavell both finished on the commendable score of +2, with Walter claiming second place on countback.

Barry Oldaker and Stewart Turner were a shot further back on +1.

The nearest the pin novelties were dominated by Oldaker, who took prizes on the second, third, eighth and 11th, while other winners included Mark Miller on the fifth, Bruce Taylor on the 13th and Marie Cook on the 15th.

The longest putters were Flavell on the first and 18th, Graeme Torney on the 16th and Allan Hitchcock on the 17th.

Bill Evans was the winner of the birdies and ferrets draw.

Friday

KELLY Hitchcock took the win in the nine-hole stroke event with a nett score of 37.

Flavell was second with 39.5 nett, while nearest the pins were Barry Elvery on the 13th and George Donaldson on the 15th.

Wednesday

BILL Evans struck his irons straight and true and combined with his customary accuracy around the scrapes he returned a great score of 31 stableford points for the 14 holes.

Oldaker’s 29 earned him second place ahead of Heather Wilkinson.

Evans won the birdies and ferrets draw and was nearest the pin on the 13th, Oldaker was nearest on the second and John Wilkinson sank the longest putt.

Monday

THE ladies kicked off a late summer season with an 18-hole stableford event, followed by a shared lunch.

To add to the challenge players were only allowed four clubs in their kit, but the restriction on the number of clubs was no hurdle for Toby Salter, who returned a brilliant 42 points for the round.

This left many at Parklands musing about the value of carrying up to 14 clubs in their bags.

Runner-up was Sue Irvin, who compiled a creditable 34 points.

Longest putters were Salter on the first and 18th, and Gaye Goggin on the 17th.

Marg Donehue took out the birdies and ferrets’ draw.

This week

THERE will be events on today, Friday, Saturday, and Monday.

The main event on Saturday will be a two-person aggregate stableford over 18 holes - enter with a partner.
