PAT Hegarty and Neville Wombwell along with Shirley Koch and Denise Gill, were the respective men’s and women’s winners of the John and Mona Hughes Memorial Day at the Casterton Golf Club on Saturday.
This annual Pinehurst event was the Opening Day of the 2023 golf season.
Golf club life member Margaret Martin officially opened the new golfing season and wished everyone a very successful year.
Results
Men’s winners: Pat Hegarty and Neville Wombwell nett 67 ½.
Women’s winners: Shirley Koch and Denise Gill nett 67 ½.
Men’s runners-up: Kim Killeen and Richard Layley nett 68.
Women’s runners-up: Yvonne Rees and Anne Michau nett 69 ½.

Wednesday Women
THE women played the Opening Day of the 2023 women’s golf season at the Casterton Golf Club last Wednesday.
The event was an Ambrose competition with drawn partners.
The winning combination was Yvonne Rees and Marion Cowland with nett70 ¾.
Runners-up were Sandra McGann and Wendy McKenzie with nett 73 ¼.
Third place was Shirley Koch and Marg Martin with nett 74 ¾.
Nearest the pins: 2nd Marg Martin, 13th Sandra McGann, 17th Michele Radford.
The trophies for the summer season were presented after the day’s play.
The Jill Crozier Summer Cup is the main summer trophy and is played over 6 rounds with points accumulated throughout the summer season.
The person with the most points at the end of the season wins the perpetual trophy.
The winner of the Jill Crozier Memorial Trophy for the 11-hole competition for 2023 was Yvonne Rees with 16 points.
Runner-up was Sandra McGann with 15points.
Third place was Denise Newell with 12 points.
Winner of the 11-hole Putting Trophy was Sandra McGann with 73 putts.
Runner-up was Yvonne Rees with 74.
Third place was Margaret Martin with 77.
The winner of the Maree Murphy 18-hole Trophy was Sandra McGann with 217.
Runner-up was Denise Gill with 229.
Third place was Marion Cowland with 231.
Wednesday men
WEDNESDAY saw 14 players enjoy a stableford game with a visitor, Tony Moore winning the day with 39 points from Roy McCallum on 38points.
Nearest the pins went to Roy McCallum 2nd, Nev Lee 13th and Max Richardson 17th.
Tony Moore also won the second shot to the 9th.
Rumour has it that a player missed a three-inch putt trying to hit the ball from across the hole and missed it totally and another player was renamed Mr Short as his attempts at putts were always short.
