HEYWOOD’S current and former footballers have claimed bragging rights in the revival of the Portland Heywood Challenge Cup, which saw the clubs go head-to-head on the golf course on Sunday.
The Challenge Cup, which originated between the two football clubs when they played in the Western Border Football League, was abandoned in 2012 – Heywood having transferred to the South West District Football League at the time – before the clubs decided to use it as a way to reconnect past and current members.
The Heywood Golf Club hosted Sunday’s competition with plenty of former and existing players hitting the course to compete.
Around 50 players competed in the handicap Ambrose event with the results of each team divided by the number of teams to get a score.
In the end Heywood won by a slim margin and as a result takes bragging rights and the cup.
Event organiser and former Heywood Football Netball Club coach and player Kevin Hughes said the day was what they had hoped for.
“It was a good concept in the end and I think everyone really enjoyed their day,” he said.
“The way we set it up was so that whatever your experience was with golf, a lot or none at all, you could be involved so that was good to see.
“I’m already looking forward to it next year; next year Portland will be hosting it and the cup will be back up for grabs so hopefully we can keep building on it each year.
“We were really grateful for the Heywood Golf Club too, they were so accommodating and happy to have us there.”
