THIS last week was a busy week at Parklands Golf Club on Saturday with the annual anti-cancer event and the final two rounds of the ladies open championship won by Irene Box in a play-off from Kelly Hitchcock.
Saturday
A TOUCH of yellow was the order of the day for the nearly 30 members and visitors who turned out for the annual Anti-cancer stableford event.
The event raised $607 for the Anti-Cancer Council, as Tim Peterson returned to play for first time in 20 years and was impressed with the course improvements in that time.
The ladies winner with 37 points was Irene Box, fresh off winning the women’s club championship on Thursday.
Runner-up was Sue Irvin on 30, one point clear of Di Raymond and Lil Hay.
The men’s winner was Barry Oldaker with 38 points, ahead of runner-up, Stewart Turner, with 35 on a countback with Dale Grambau and Bruce Taylor.
Nearest the pins went to Jenny Row and Oldaker on the second, Kelly Hitchcock and Tim Peterson on the third, Row and Graeme Hausler on the fifth, Sue Irvin and Andrew Lewis on the eighth, Jo Forsyth and Andrew Lewis on the 11th, Row and James Brown on the 13th, and Forsyth on the 15th.
Longest putt on the first went to Jenny Row and Stewart Turner, Forsyth and Vince O’Brien on the 16th, Row and Allan Flavell on the 17th, and Box and Peterson on the 18th.
Birdies and ferrets was won by Heather Wilkinson and Graeme Torney, while the longest straight drive on the ninth went to Jo Forsyth and Dale Grambau.
Friday
BRUCE Taylor won the handicap nine-hole stroke event with a net 31 points and also nearest the pin on the 13th.
Peter Irvin was second on a countback for John Wilkinson with net 32.5.
Irvin was also nearest the pin on the second, while Pat Anderson was the birdies and ferrets winner.
Thursday
HITCHCOCK won the 18-hole event with a nett 71, ahead of Mary McCallum on nett 74.
Box was nearest the pin on the fifth, 13th and 15th, while longest putt on the first went to McCallum, Toby Salter on the 17th, and Hay on the 18th, and also claimed the birdies and ferrets.
It was the fourth and final round of the ladies championship that drew Hitchcock level with Irene Box with a total of 279 strokes over the four days, an impressive 40 strokes less than the rest of the field.
Box and Hitchcock still could not be separated after playing an additional play-off hole, with the second playoff hole seeing Hitchcock suffer a penalty for mishitting the ball out of bounds, before Box steadied to win the hole claim the win on handicap.
Wednesday
WILLIAM Evans won the 12-hole event with a score of 26, ahead of Bruce Taylor 22 on countback from Chris Marchant.
Taylor was nearest the pin on 13th and also holed the longest putt on first.
Oldaker was nearest the pin on the 13th and won the birdies and ferrets.
Tuesday
SALTER was the winner of the 18-hole stroke event, which doubled as the third round of the ladies championship, with a score of 69.
Sue was second with a score of 74, while Hitchcock was third on a countback on 77 from Mary McCallum.
Nearest the pin was Hay on the eighth, Row on the 13th and Box on the 15th.
Longest putts went to Hay on the first and Heather Wilkinson on the 18th, while longest straight drive on the ninth was by McCallum and birdies and ferrets was won by Salter.

NEXT Saturday is an 18-hole stroke event that for the men will also be the June Monthly Medal and the second round of the men’s open championship, starting at midday for 12.30pm hit off.
