PARKLANDER CANDOUR

THE four-person ambrose competition was held in wildly varying conditions on Sunday.

For many, the social aspects of golf are far more appealing than the competition the game provides, and the ambrose format makes for an entertaining, social game.

Parklands Golf Club welcomed visitors from Coleraine, Macarthur, Mooralla and Merino who enjoyed the round followed by the welcome afternoon tea in the warm clubhouse.

Sunday

THE winning team for the 18-hole scratch competition was a family affair, consisting of Allan, Kelly and Rachael Hitchcock and Mark Miller who combined to win with a score of 71.

The field was close in the handicap standings, which was won by the team of Heather Wilkinson, George Donaldson, Graeme Torney and Steve Nattrass who had a nett 62.5, claiming top honours by less than one stroke.

There was strong competition for the generous prizes on offer for the novelties.

The longest straightest drive on the ninth was won convincingly by Wayne Rowland with a monster drive considering the conditions.

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Donaldson (second), Miller (third), Howard Templeton (fifth and eighth), Bruce Taylor (11th), Lex Cassidy (13th) and Kelly (15th).

The Longest Putt prizes were won by Ron Oakley (first), Wilkinson (16th), new member, Michael Hiscock (17th) and Kelly (18th).

 Friday

ANOTHER fine day for golf was on offer during Friday’s stroke competition held on the old nine holes.

George Donaldson won with a 32 nett from the in-form Bruce Taylor on 35.5 nett.

Phil Kosch is returning to form and claimed the nearest the pin on the second and the longest putt prizes.

Donaldson won the Nearest the Pin prize on the 13th.

Wednesday

PLEASANT conditions overhead and underfoot greeted the field for the 12-hole stableford event.

Taylor streeted the field to win with 24 points from Peter Irvin on 19 points and Alex Walter on 18 points.

The top three dominated the novelty prizes with Taylor nearest the pin on the 15th, and Walter nearest on the second.

Irvin won the birdies and ferrets and Stewart Turner prevented their clean sweep by being nearest the pin on the 13th.

Tuesday

THE field enjoyed a round of two-person Ambrose with a draw for partners.

Irene Box and Gaye Goggin secured first place with nett 79 from Marie Cook and Heather Wilkinson on 80.75.

Sue Irvin may not have placed, but she had a day out winning a selection of the novelties including the longest straightest drive on the ninth, the longest putt on the first and 18th, and nearest the pin on the 15th.

The other nearest the pin prizes went to Box on the fifth and 13th.

Heather Hay was nearest the pin on the eighth and hit the longest putt on the 17th.

The birdies and ferrets prize was won by Wilkinson.

This week

COMPETITIONS will be held today, Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday.

Saturday’s competition is the 18-hole Monthly Medal stroke event, which is the final round of the men’s club championship.
