Parklander candour

THE Parklands Golf Club volunteers have been busy across a range of activities since the conclusion of the annual tournament.

Jobs included the installation of impressive new signs around the course which advertise local businesses and the various novelty prizes on offer during competition. 

Other developments include ongoing works for the reversal of the seventh and eighth holes, preparation of a storage bunker, the clearing of the pine trees adjacent to the sixth hole and Les Pye continues his war against the weed plantain.

Saturday

SATURDAY’S 18-hole par competition was the challenging par format played in pleasant conditions. 

Some enjoyed the challenge more than others and there was an exceptionally large range of scores returned. 

Alex Walter maintained his good form, winning with a score of +3. 

Graeme Torney claimed second in a countback from Mark Miller after both returned with +2. 

Torney’s good day continued into the novelties, where he was nearest the pin on the second hole, and the holed the longest putts on the first and 17th. 

Vincent O’Brien claimed nearest the pins on the fifth and 13th, along with the longest putt on the 16th. 

Other nearest the pins went to George Donaldson (third), Miller (11th), and Stewart Turner won the longest putt on the 18th. 

On an otherwise forgettable day for Steve Natrass, he won the birdies and ferrets prize.

Friday

THE field endured a hot afternoon and evening for Friday’s Summer nine-hole stroke twilight competition, which was played from the red markers. 

Club secretary, Bruce Taylor, won convincingly with nett 32.5 and has had his handicap trimmed accordingly. 

Heather Wilkinson claimed second place with nett 35, edging out Marie Cook, who returned with nett 35.5. 

Cook won the nearest the pin prize on the 13th, and Taylor won the birdies and ferrets prize.

Wednesday

WALTER started his week in fine form winning Wednesday’s 12-hole stableford competition with 26 points.

Stewart Turner was runner-up with 24 points, one clear of third-placed George Donaldson in the minor placings.

Bernie Cook claimed the longest putt prize on the first and the nearest the pin prize on the 13th. 

Turner won the nearest the pin on the 15th, while Barry Oldaker collected the birdies and ferrets prize.

This week

THERE are competitions on Wednesday and Friday with the 18-hole two-person ambrose competition at midday on Saturday.
