WITH the course in tip top condition and the greens running fast after their recent coring, the Hamilton Golf Club commenced its annual tournament this week.
The first event was the women’s stroke on Wednesday and the men’s and women’s 4BBB par yesterday.
Today will see the men’s 36-hole stroke championship with a strong field contesting this event.
There is also a men’s and women’s 18-hole stableford, while the tournament will conclude tomorrow with a four-person gentsomes event.
Saturday
A FIELD of 40 men and 18 women participated in Saturday’s par event and the men’s results were a close contest with Peter Fox winning on a countback from Tim Walkenhorst after both returned +6.
Bruce Luhrs was third with +4.
Ball run down went to John Raymond +3, Mark O’Brien, John Andrews and Steve Coates +2, and Barry Raymond and Martin Pitts +1.
Nearest the pins went to John Raymond on the third, Michael Kelso got closest on the sixth and 13th holes, while Mark O’Brien took out the prize on the 16th; the closest second shot on the ninth went to Ben Kelson and Noel Jennings on the 15th.
In the women’s section there were three players who finished on +2 with a countback giving Helen Holcombe the win ahead of runner-up, Di Sevior.
Third spot and the start of ball run down went to Robyn Holcombe, with Bev Tyson, Jo Forsyth and Molly O’Brien making up the other placings with +1.
Nearest the pins on the third went to Molly O’Brien, Forsyth saluted on the sixth, the 13th was won by Helen Holcombe, and Tyson on the 16th; closest second shot on the 15th was struck by Robyn Holcombe.
Wednesday
THE first event of our annual tournament was the women's stroke and the club welcomed visitors from East Framlingham, Portland, Heywood, Horsham, Parklands, Grampians and Casterton.
Sue Walter had the best round of the day, taking out the A grade scratch with an 80 off the stick from Molly O'Brien 82.
In the A grade handicap, Portland’s Tania Heaphy was the winner with a 76 nett, one ahead of runner-up, Glen Dixon.
B grade scratch was won by Di Raymond with 92, with Enid Smith runner-up on 95.
B grade handicap was a very close affair with a five-way countback deciding the placings.
Chantal Butcher took first place on a countback from runner-up, Sue Bensch, after both returned 73 nett.
C grade scratch went to Rhonda Scullion with 106, six clear of runner-up, Di Hatherell.
Bec Small took out the C grade handicap with 73nett, ahead of runner-up, Judy Pekin, with 76 nett.
Nearest the pins were - Pam Howell, visitor - Julie Neumann (third); local- Anne Ryan, visitor - Julie Neumann (sixth) and local - Sue Bensch (16th); longest putt on the 13th - local Molly O'Brien, visitor - Jenny Foster.
Margot Young Bowl - team of three- person aggregate score - donated by Peter and Lindy Young went to Enid Smith 73, Glen Dixon 77 and Jen Pike 74 - total 224.
Tuesday
IN the beginners and emerging golfers group, Helen Dillon had a great round scoring 23 points, two ahead of runner-up, Kerry Martin, and third went to Alan Mclaughlan with 18.
In the nine-hole competition, Kath Hartwich won with 16 points from Liz Wallis on 14.
