PARKLANDER CANDOUR

IT was a busy week for Parklands Golf Club, commencing with the AGM on Monday night.

Those returning on the executive were Vince O’Brien as president, Peter Irvin as treasurer, Bruce Taylor as secretary and Barry Oldaker as Men’s Captain.

Incoming vice president is Marie Cook, and Ladies Captain is Heather Wilkinson.

Stewart Turner, Sue Irvin and Heather Hay make up the committee.

Our volunteers continue their work on the course and were delighted with the rain that fell on Friday and Saturday, providing some welcome relief after such a dry November.

Saturday night was our presentation night with a barbecue tea and recognition of the golfers who had excelled throughout the season.

The club’s scratch champions were Irene Box and James Brown, alongside handicap champions, Kelly Hitchcock and Dale Grambeau.

Everyone in attendance enjoyed the evening and the chance to applaud the good golfers among us.

Saturday

DESPITE the forecast of heavy showers, some stoic players played a two-person gentsomes.

Raincoats and umbrellas were needed on several occasions throughout the round, however the winning pair was not deterred, with Alex Walter and Steve Nattrass topping the scores with 84

Barry Oldaker and Irene Box were runners-up with 67 on a countback from Vincent O’Brien and Bernie Cook.

Nearest the pins went to Oldaker on the second and 11th, Taylor on the third, the fifth to Stewart Turner, Nattrass on the 13th and 15th.

Nattrass holed the longest putt on the 16th, George Donaldson on the 17th and Taylor on the 18th.

Birdies and ferrets was won by Box.

Friday’s event was cancelled due to weather conditions.

Wednesday

AGAIN, in sunny conditions the regular players battled out a stableford event over 13 holes.

George Donaldson turned out a great round for the day, turning in 30 points to win from Bill Evans on 24 on a countback from Oldaker.

Nearest the pin on the second went to Oldaker, Taylor was nearest the pin on the fifth, and our unbeatable putter, Walter, won the longest putt on the first.

Oldaker won the birdies and ferrets.

Tuesday

THIS was the final 18-hole Tuesday for the year the round and was designed for all golfers to have some fun.

Players were restricted to four clubs, one having to be your putter, and the sweeteners added in were two mulligans and hitting off from the 150-metre mark on the par fives.

This format obviously resulted in some good scores, but nobody better than Toby Salter, who returned with 47 stableford points ahead of Mary McCallum on 43 and Wilkinson on 42

Nearest the pins were awarded to Allan Hitchcock on the fifth, Gaye Goggin on the 13th, and Salter on the 15th.

The longest putt on the first was won by Hitchcock, while McCallum impressed on the 18th, with Wilkinson saluting on the 17th and also claimed the birdies and ferrets.

This week GOLF will be played on Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday, with Saturday’s stroke round set to double as the Monthly Medal, with a 12pm for 12.30pm start
