CANCER is one of the leading causes of death in Australia, and Parklands Golf Club has been impacted throughout its history by the loss of valued members to cancer.
Members who were integral to the fabric and culture of the club, and next Saturday Parklands will continue its proud tradition of hosting its annual cancer support fundraiser.
All entry fees will be donated to the Cancer Council of Victoria, which provides support to those affected by cancer.
Visitors are invited to participate from midday on Saturday.
Saturday
THE field enjoyed excellent conditions for Saturday’s 18-hole stableford competition, which was won convincingly by Mark Miller with 38 points.
Second place was won by George Donaldson on a countback from Terry Rhook after both scored 36 points, and a three-way countback for fourth place was won by Vincent O’Brien from Barry Oldaker with 33 points.
Miller dominated the novelty prizes, including the nearest the pin prizes on the second, third and 13th, along with the longest putt on the 18th and the birdies and ferrets prize.
The other nearest the pins went to O’Brien on the fifth, Andrew Coyne on the seventh, and Rhook on the 11th.
The other Longest Putts went to Steve Nattrass on the first, Graeme Torney on the 16th, and Wayne Rowland on the 17th.
Friday
GOOD numbers contested the nine-hole stroke competition, with Bernie Cook winning with a nett score of 31.5 on a countback from Mark Miller, while Les Pye was third with nett 32.
The longest putt on the first was won by Pye, and the nearest the pin prizes went to Barry Oldaker on the second, and Phil Kosch on the 13th.
Miller also collected the birdies and ferrets prize.
Thursday
GLORIOUS conditions greeted the field for the second round of the Ladies Championships, which was an 18-hole stableford event on Thursday.
Jaymie Broad won convincingly with a nett score of 67, while Kelly Hitchcock claimed second place on a countback from Iren Box after both finished with nett 73.
Broad took home a collection of novelties including nearest the pin prizes on the seventh and 13th, and the birdies and ferrets prize.
Other nearest the pins went to Toby Salter on the fifth and Hitchcock on the 15th.
Hitchcock also holed the longest putt on the first, while Salter collected the longest putt on the 17th, and Heather Wilkinson on the 18th.
Wednesday
IT was a close-run competition in the nine-hole stableford, with John Wilkinson winning with 20 points from Les Pye on 19 and Brian Mibus on 14.
Nearest the pin prizes went to Oldaker on the fifth and Mibus on the second.
Wilkinson also holed the longest putt prize on the first, and Oldaker won the birdies and ferrets prize.
Tuesday
THE first round of the Ladies Championships was held in pleasant conditions on Tuesday with an 18-hole stableford event, which was won by Gina Kelly with a nett score of 64.
The minor placings went to Jenny Row (nett 65), Mary McCallum (nett 68), Heather Hay (nett 71) and Heather Wilkinson on a countback with nett 72.
The nearest the pins went to Row on the fifth, McCallum on the seventh, Heather Wilkinson on the 13th, and Irene Box on the 15th.
McCallum also holed the longest putt on the first and the birdies and ferrets prize.
The other longest putt prizes were shared between Broad (17th) and Kelly (18th), while Row won the putting prize with 23 putts.
This week
IT is a busy week coming up on the course with the third and fourth rounds of the Ladies Championships on Tuesday and Thursday.
The annual Cancer Support Golf Day is being held from midday on Saturday and visitors are invited to enter this fundraiser 18-hole stableford competition.
