Parklander candour

THE Ambrose format of golf allows all standards of golfers to mix and play together with equal enjoyment irrespective of ability.

As seen regularly at Parklands Golf Club, this format provides an opportunity for teams consisting of multiple generations of family to enjoy a round of competitive golf together.

Some thrive on the banter and support and competitive challenges with teammates, and others the opportunity to take their second shots from unfamiliar places on the course.

Sunday

THE 18-hole four-person Ambrose competition produced some close finishes.

The team of Wayne Rowland, Andrew Hentsridge, Corey Hentsridge and Mary McCallum won the Scratch competition in a countback with score of 69.

The family-based team of Heather Hay, Kedar Giles, Dale Harris and Toby Salter won the Handicap competition by an extremely slim margin, with a nett 60 3/8.

Harris’ rewarding afternoon continued, winning the nearest the pin prizes on the second and fifth holes.

The other nearest the pin prizes went to Vincent O’Brien (seventh), Rowland (13th) and Kelly Hitchcock (15th).

Irene Box hit the longest straightest drive on the ninth, and Rowland also took home the birdies and ferrets prize.

Saturday

A SMALL, but undeniably dedicated group competed in trying conditions for the novelty four-club Gentsomes event off the red markers.

Barry Oldaker and Bruce Taylor combined for a winning score of 43 points from Peter Irvin and Graeme Torney on 40.

Taylor had a day out with the novelty prizes, claiming nearest the pins on the third and fifth, and the longest putt on the first and 17th.

The other nearest the pins went to Oldaker (first), Torney (11th) and Alex Walter (13th).

The other longest putt prizes went to George Donaldson (16th) and Walter (18th).

Mark Miller won the birdies and ferrets prize.

Friday

THE nine-hole stroke competition on the old nine holes was won by Oldaker with a nett 31 from Les Pye on 35, and Irvin on 36.5.

The longest putt on the first was won by Taylor, and Pye was nearest the pin on the 15th.

Wednesday

THE field enjoyed the pleasant conditions on offer for Wednesday’s 12-hole stableford competition, which was won by Stuart Turner with 23 points.

John Wilkinson took out second place with 22 points from Oldaker on 20 points.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Turner (second and 13th) and Taylor (15th).

Oldaker holed the longest putt on the first and Wilkinson won the birdies and ferrets.

Tuesday

WHAT an improvement Tuesday’s weather was on the previous week.

Despite the lack of run provided by the fairways, Heather Wilkinson made the most of the playing conditions on offer to win the 18-hole stroke competition on a countback from Toby Salter after both scored nett 78.

Irene Box was third with nett 81.

The nearest the pins were shared between Box (fifth), Allan Hitchcock (seventh) and Sue Irvin (15th).

Box hit the longest putt on the first, and Hay holed the longest putt on the 17th and the birdies and ferrets.

The other longest putts went to Wilkinson (first), Salter (17th) and Hitchcock (18th).

Hay won the putting prize with 26 putts.
