Parklander candour

PARKLANDS Golf Club was given the honour of hosting the mixed gender Victorian Veterans Golf Association Sandgreen Championships for 2024.

Competition commenced with a 4BBB stableford on Monday with the winners being Heywood’s Ann Dickinson and Heather “Lil’ Hay from Parklands. 

The Singles State Sandgreen Championship was a stableford event on Tuesday, and it was hometown hero, Barry Oldaker, who topped the scores to be named the Victorian Champion.

Parklands Golf Club would like to thank the Southern Grampians Shire Council for being a major sponsor of this event, assisting with course improvements to present the course to a high standard for such a prestigious Victorian event.

 Entrants came from the Mornington Peninsula, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Ararat as well as the Southern Grampians, Glenelg and the Wimmera.

Tuesday

THERE was no normal Tuesday event due to hosting the Victorian Singles Sandgreen Championships.

Wednesday

BERNIE Cook has returned to form and won the 13-hole event with 28 points, ahead of runner-up, Stewart Turner, on 26 and third-placed Bruce Taylor on 22.

Nearest the pin on the fifth was John Wilkinson and Taylor on the 13th.

John Wilkinson had the longest putt on the first.

Friday

THE nine-holes stroke event played across the old nine saw David Rendell narrowly claim victory with nett 32.5 from Peter Irvin on nett 33 and Taylor on nett 34.

Nearest the pins were Irvin on the second and David Rendell on the 13th.

Birdies and ferrets went to Oldaker. 

Saturday

A TWO-PERSON Pinehurst event was played in sunny conditions with a passing shower.

The team of Alex Walter and Taylor took the day with a gritty 71.25 nett, ahead of runners-up, George Donaldson and Graeme Torney, with a nett 75.

Nearest the pins were Taylor on the fifth, George Donaldson on the seventh, Barry Oldaker on the 13th and Irene Box on the 15th.

Longest putters were Sue Irvin on the first, Vince O’Brien on the 16th, Peter Irvin on the 17th and Oldaker on the 18th.

Turner landed the longest straightest drive on the ninth, and birdies and ferrets was won by Walter.

This week

NORMAL weekly competitions resume, including Wednesday’s 12-hole stableford and a Friday nine-hole stroke event, starting at noon and all welcome.

Saturday’s stroke event will be something different - maybe a red tees event - the captain will tell us on Saturday.

Arrive at Noon for a 12.30 start, all welcome for a fun afternoon of some sort of golf.

Tuesday’s competition is an 18 Hole stoke event, 9.30am, all welcome.
