Parklander Candour

SO many fail because they don't get started - they don't go.

They don't overcome inertia. They don't begin. – Ben Stein.

Parkland’s Golf Club is offering an opportunity to those who are interested in starting or re-starting rounds of golf socially.

This is the opportunity to see what the Parkland’s community can offer you, including opportunities to meet new people, make friends, challenge yourself to a new skill and enjoy a walk in the beautiful surroundings on offer at Parklands.

Later this week the summer of Fun Fridays kicks off with a nine-hole non-competitive event where visitors can enjoy a social round of golf.

Beginners and returning golfers are encouraged to come and join in with the Parkland’s community and this week’s round will be followed by a free barbecue.

All are invited to meet at the clubhouse at 4.45pm for a 5pm tee-off.

Saturday

THE field was tightly bunched for the 18-hole par competition, which Marie Cook won on a countback from Allan Hitchcock after both finished square.

Heather Wilkinson claimed third place in another countback from Terry Rhook, both with -1.

Barry Oldaker finished fifth in yet another countback on -2.

Cook also claimed the longest putt on the 16th, along with the birdies and ferrets prize, while Oldaker holed the longest putt on the 17th and was nearest the pin on the 15th.

Other nearest the pins went to Kelly Hitchcock (second and fifth), Ron Oakley (third and seventh), Rhook (11th) and Allan Flavell (13th).

Longest Putts went to Alec Walter on the first and Graeme Torney on the 18th.

Friday

THE field was confronted with playing off the red tees using the summer rating for the nine-hole stroke event.

Those who were able stick to the fairways often were unfazed by this, with Bruce Taylor the clear winner with nett 39.

Runner-up, Stewart Turner, finished with nett 41.5 to edge out Cook, who scored nett 42.

Paul Lowry was nearest the pin on the fifth.

Wednesday

OLDAKER had a positive day on the course, winning the 12-hole stableford competition with 27 points.

Turner took out second place with 22 points on a countback from Bernie Cook, both on 22 points.

Cook scooped the nearest the pin prizes (second and 13th), and Turner holed the longest putt on the first.

Oldaker also won the birdies and ferrets.

Tuesday

MARIE Cook and Gaye Goggin combined and enjoyed perfect conditions to win the 18-hole two-person stroke competition with nett 78 3/8, finishing ahead of runners-up, Irene Box and Heather Hay, who had nett 81 1/8.

For the novelty prizes, the nearest the pins went to Goggin (fifth), Hay (13th), and Cook (15th), while the longest putt on the first and 17th also went to Cook.

Toby Salter collected the longest putt prize on the 18th, and the birdies and ferrets, while Marie struck the longest, straightest drive on the ninth.

Following golf, the members enjoyed lunch and watched the Melbourne Cup with Cook’s winning ways continuing with victory in the sweep.
