Hockey award winners acknowledged

THE Glenelg Region Hockey Association ended its 2021 season on a high with its presentations on Sunday.

All premiership teams were acknowledged, along with individual award winners across each of the divisions.

Coleraine Bulls was awarded the Division 1 Men’s premiership, while College Thundersticks collected the Division 1 Women’s top team honour.

Demons was officially acknowledged as the Division 2 Women champions, while College Tassie Devils collected the Division 4 honour and Coleraine Black was Division 5 champions.

The 16-and-Under premiership was awarded to Coleraine.

The best and fairests were also handed out with Coleraine Bulls’ Angus Kissell winning the Division 1 Men’s award ahead of runner-up, Coleraine Rams’ Trevor Row.

The Division 1 Women’s award was won by Dunkeld’s Grace Potter, who finished ahead of College’s Alyssa Hocking.

Division 2 Women top honours went to Demons’ Ruby Cush, who edged out runner-up, Monivae’s Katelyn Millard.

Will Merrin flew the flag for College Panda Bears, collecting the 16-and-Under best and fairest ahead of College Polar Bears’ Isaac Shaw.

Tom Templeton topped the Division 4 honours for College Tassie Devils, finishing ahead of College Drop Bears’ Olivia Read.

Coleraine’s Heston Small collected the Division 5 title, with five other players tying in second place - Jessica Templeton (Coleraine), Angus Tindall (Coleraine), Tyson Mibus (Demons), Seamus McDonald (Dunkeld) and Maggie Mercer (College).

Rounding out the awards was the highest goal scorers with Coleraine Rams’ Trevor Row topping the Division 1 Men, while Grace Austin found the net more than anyone else in Division 1 Women.

Liz Mecham (Demons) was the standout in Division 2 Women, while Templeton dominated the scoring in Division 4.

Small topped the Division 5 scores, and Kissel was the best of the 16-and-Under scorers.

Outgoing association president, Peter Musson said it was important to finish the season with presentations to acknowledge the efforts of players and the determination to push on in what was a shorter season, due to COVID restrictions.

“We felt we needed to acknowledge the players for the short season, there were some outstanding players along the way,” he said.

“We felt the kids needed some recognition for their time and efforts, so hopefully it can help keep the momentum going into next year.”

It comes as the association had its Annual General Meeting last week with a new president elected.

“Mark Templeton took over as president, and if nobody else wants to fill the role of vice-president I said I would be willing to do that for a year,” Musson said.

“He was vice-president, so that and the president are the only two changes.”
