Hockey season gets underway

THE 2022 Glenelg Region Hockey Association season got underway last weekend with some big wins across the Division 1 Men and Division 1 Women games.

Division 1 Women

COLERAINE started the season off with a dominant performance against College Thundersticks, winning 4-0, on Sunday.

Portia Northcott and Jess Hayes both finished with a double, as the pair proved a handful for the Thundersticks and ensured their team won the round one encounter.

DUNKELD Blue claimed club bragging rights against Dunkeld Red in the other game, winning a 2-1 thriller.

Elle Moyle was the lone hand in attack for Red, scoring the team’s only goal, while Lucy Fraser and Sarah Bull found the back of the net for Blue to lead their team to victory.

Division 1 Men

COLERAINE Rams and Monivae fought out a close contest in Friday night’s early game, with the Rams holding on to win, 4-3.

The Rams’ scoring threats were multi-pronged with Tim Curry finishing the game with a double, while Al Lewis and Sam Ness also found the back of the net once each in the win.

Monivae’s goals went to Jack Henderson, Lachie McArthur and Marcus Patience.

COLERAINE Bulls put up the biggest score of the round to easily account for College, 11-1.

Tim Dean found the back of the net five times, while Mark Jarvis scored a double along with Tom Scholfield.

Gordon Last and Mark Templeton each scored a single to round out the team’s scorers.

College’s Ciaran Nelson was the lone goal scorer at the other end.

DEMONS also started the new season off with a win, outplaying Couldabeens to win, 5-2.

James Stubbs scored twice for the winners, while Bradley Coon, James Guthrig and Reuben Mirtschin found the back of the net once each.

Couldabeens goals were scored by Ed Lyon and Daniel Knight, with the pair scoring once each.
