Top two can’t be split

THE top two teams on the Glenelg Region Hockey Men’s Division One premiership ladder, Rams and Jakabytes, couldn’t be separated on Sunday, playing out a tense 1-1 draw at Brian Roberts Field.

The game was the last of a packed day of senior hockey, as the best two teams in the competition locked horns for the premiership points and bragging rights.

Jakabytes were not even in the original draw, as the side has been cobbled together to rid the competition of a bye and the team has yet to lose in its first two games together.

The scoreboard stalemate was broken when Jett Piergrosse swooped on a loose ball and netted his shot, as the Rams took the lead, but Paige Kissel continued her goal scoring form for the Jakabytes when she replied at the opposite end to tie the contest, with scores not changing again.

Couldabeens v Demons

COULDABEENS took care of business in the early game, as the side produced some entertaining hockey in its 3-1 win over the Demons.

Opportunities to score were limited, as defenders and goal keepers saved shots on goal and sent the ball back up field, but when the chance to net came, Jack Addinsall and Edmond Lyon scored for the Couldabeens.

At the opposite end of the field, the Demons were able to reply via James Guthrig to keep the side in the game, but they were unable to close the gap and the Couldabeens recorded its first win of the season to sit in the top four, while Demons remain in bottom spot.

College v Bulls

COLLEGE remains winless after the first three games of the 2023 season, going down to the Bulls, 2-6, in a lop-sided game in the afternoon timeslot.

While College is yet to win a game, they have only lost a single game after drawing its first two games of the season.

The Bulls saw James Broad net twice, while Mark Jarvis, Tom Scholfield and Gordon Last all added their names to the scoresheet as well, as the College defence failed to come to terms with the Bulls’ attacking raids.

College did have some success though, as Isaac Shaw added another goal to his season tally and Edward Williamson doubled the College score.

Women’s Division 1

Dunkeld Red v Dunkeld White

IT was a highly entertaining game that opened proceedings on Sunday afternoon, as Dunkeld Red and Dunkeld White did battle in the early timeslot, as White leapfrogged the Red team on the ladder with a 3-2 victory.

The two teams entered the game with only one goal between them in the opening two rounds, as both teams played open attacking hockey from the outset.

The lead swapped back and forth with goals coming from Ella Peters, Kate Pinkerton and Margret Williams for White, while Michelle Winnell netted twice for the Red team.

College v Dunkeld Blue

College retained its undefeated status atop the premiership ladder after it accounted for Dunkeld Blue, 4-1. College allowed its goal to be breached for the only time this season, as Nyla Conheady netted for the Blue team, but Emma Robertson, Sophie Merrin and Lilly Cush (two goals) replied for College to seal the win.
