THE Hamilton Kangaroos have got back on the Hampden Football Netball League Open netball winners list, accounting for Camperdown by 14 goals at Leura Oval on Saturday.
The first term was a see-sawing battle with just one goal separating the two sides at the first break.
Hamilton was unable to shake the Magpies in the second term, leading 24-23 at the main break.
A strong second half ensured the team collected the points and kept its slim finals chances alive.
Kangaroos coach, Nat O’Dea said it was another slow start, but the girls persisted until the final whistle.
“We just can’t get the starts right,” she said.
“Kellie (Sommerville) and Leesa (Iredell) both pulled out on Friday, so we just had the seven and so we had to rejig the midcourt.
“It is nice to get Camperdown away game out of the road early though, I think that is the furthest we travel,”
A shift at quarter time saw Kyra McKinnis move from centre to wing defence, while Eve move into centre, with the move eventually paying off.
“By the end of the second quarter, we were finding our groove,” O’Dea said.
“Upon reflection, it wasn’t ideal, but we knew we had to get the four points.”
Hayley Sherlock spent the game in goals and finished with a game-high 34, while Lewis chipped in with 21 in the 55-41 victory.
O’Dea said Sherlock had another strong game and settled into her rhythm as the game went on.
“Hayley played a damn good game, once she got used to the passing,” she said.
“Once they found their rhythm, there were some magical passages of play.”
With Rhianne Lewis now shifting to Division 1, Ella Sevior and Emma Sommerville held up the defensive end with the team still yet to settle on their best positions.
“I don’t think anyone can say they have their spot yet, just because we have had to move the magnets so much already,” O’Dea said.
Sommerville, Sevior and Sherlock were named the Kangaroos’ best in the round eight win.
Hamilton sits in ninth position, but equal with seventh on points, and will be hoping to close to within one game of sixth position with a win against Port Fairy on Saturday.
