Penshurst fly high as Ararat fail to take off

PENSHURST has continued to soar high in the Mininera and District Netball Association, as the Bombers returned from their road trip to Ararat with the points safely tucked away after defeating the hosts, 51-30, on Saturday.

A strong opening quarter saw the visitors race out to an 11-goal lead at the first change of ends, as the Bombers came out looking to play their fast, open style and put pressure on the home side.

At the half time whistle, the lead had increased to 14 goals, as Penshurst took complete control of the match.

When play resumed for the second half, the Bombers continued to apply the pressure which had stood them in good stead and by the final siren the margin was 21 goals.

Rachael Mibus and Leah Mirtschin were on fire for the Bombers with Mibus netting 37 goals, while Mirtschin drove the play all game long.

Taryn Kelly and Kiara Pitcher did all within their power to halt the Bombers onslaught with Kira Stapleton netting 16 goals in reply for the home side.

The win means the Bombers continue to hold second spot on the ladder and the victory opens a gap of four points over Ararat, but still eight points shy of the undefeated Tatyoon with four rounds remaining in the home and away season.

Other games

GLENTHOMPSON-DUNKELD was no match for the undefeated ladder leader, Tatyoon, at Glenthompson, as the Hawks attacked from the first whistle to take the points, 64-27.

The Hawks swooped to take control of the game from halfway through the first quarter, setting up the win with 21 first-quarter goals.

By half time, the margin between the teams had extended to 28 goals and it increased with each passing minute, as the ladder leaders flexed their muscles, going on to win by 37.

Jessica Field and Sarah Alderman were best on court for the Rams as Alderman netted 20 goals, as Alice Astbury and Amelia Rundle were standouts for the Hawks.

HAWKESDALE-MACARTHUR increased its percentage with a huge victory against Moyston-Willaura at Hawkesdale, 74-17.

The game was over in the third quarter, as the Eagles changed gear and attacked even more, adding a further 39 goals in the second half.

Madison Kelly and Josie Barker led the way for the home team, as Kelly put up 46 goals, while Briana Close gave her all for the visitors.

GREAT WESTERN hosted SMW Rovers and the teams had the closest result of the round, as the home side went down by eight goals, 53-61.

The two teams can’t play finals, so the remaining matches of the home and away season count for that little more than pride and bragging rights.

After a very even first term where the Lions held a one-goal advantage, the Bulldogs took control of the game over the next two quarters when they added a further 34 goals to three quarter time, only to have their hosts come back in the last quarter but fall short of victory.

LISMORE-DERRINALLUM hosted Woorndoo-Mortlake and the home side came away with the points after posting a 53-38 victory.

The Demons were made to battle hard for their victory, as the Tigers refused to lay down with Tessa Lamont and Steff Cox controlling the ball for the home side, while Emma Smith did well for the visitors.
