A BIG round one is set for the South West District Netball League with clubs going head-to-head for the first time in 2023 tomorrow.
There are some big line ups set for the day with reigning premiers Tyrendarra taking on a new look Westerns outfit at Portland’s Hanlon Park.
With both sides seeing plenty of movement in their ranks through the off season there will be a lot to iron out when the A grade sides hit the court at 2pm.
Westerns have plenty of options in their shooting line up with the return of 2017 league best and fairest Brooke Polaski to bolster the side.
Westerns A grade coach Lisa Carr said they have an exciting combination of fresh faces to the team that they are ready to test out.
“Our A grade is looking very different to last year, we’ve only got three girls left from last year’s team but a lot of experience is there,” she said.
“Paige (Clayton), Ruby (Church) and Ash (Marley) are back which is great and then we’ve got Ash Boyer who is coming back up to A grade and Brooke Polaski is back which is a key signing for us.
“We’ve also put juniors in throughout the grades and Sienna Stone, who is a great kid, is in A grade. It’s so nice to bring in some younger ones and she’s going to be surrounded by a lot of experience and skill.”
The team will face Tyrendarra tomorrow, who has also had plenty of movement in the team, retaining four players from last year and seeing some new inclusions.
Both shooting ends will be a focal point in tomorrow’s game with Tyrendarra’s line up of Hannah Van Gemst and Eliza Alexander solid targets while the Roos can work with any number of combinations including Polaski, Church, Stone and Boyer.
Dartmoor v Heywood
Last year’s grand finalist Dartmoor will host Heywood tomorrow with both sides welcoming some fresh faces for the new season.
The Giants had a dominant rise in the competition last year and while they have lost some star power they have plenty of depth to draw from.
The Lions will be looking to improve from their 2022 season where they narrowly missed finals with the inclusion of returning player Mharni Gordon expected to strengthen their defensive ranks.
Heywood coach Hayley Friend said the club has bought up some of their juniors with round one a great opportunity to get them on court.
“We’re a young side which will be good to develop those juniors throughout seniors,” she said.
“Tiarna (Keegan), Maddi (Barr) and Mia (Melano) are coming into A grade permanently and will get a good run up against some tough opponents.
“We’ve got Shakira (Stuchbery) back and Jess (Lovett-Murray) as well as Aleesha (Wilson) – Makybe Sheehan has also come back to the club and she has shone really brightly through the midcourt during selections so I’m excited to see what she can do.”
Cavendish v Coleraine
Tomorrow will be a big opportunity for Cavendish and Coleraine to test out some of their new recruits when they compete at Cavendish Recreation Reserve.
After finishing third last year, after a close loss to Dartmoor in the preliminary final, Cavendish has some strong inclusions in their A grade side this season including Dartmoor playing coach from 2023, Elise Haw.
Returning player Erin Kinnealy will bring plenty of presence to their defensive end while new addition to the club Lauren Cameron is expected to play a big role in their midcourt.
Cavendish will come up against a firing Coleraine outfit who made finals last year before the Bloods knocked them out in the elimination final.
It will be a chance for Coleraine to test their line up and make their mark ahead of the season.
• Branxholme-Wallacedale’s A grade side will get one more week of preparation with the team fixtured to play against Heathmere who are not fielding an A grade team in 2023.
