Giants build belief

DARTMOOR has proven they are continuing their form from 2022 despite some personnel changes after defeating Cavendish by four goals on Saturday.

The South West District Netball League round six contest saw plenty of strong match ups across the court with the Giants’ first quarter seeing them get a six-goal jump on their opponents.

“Their shots weren’t missing in that first quarter so we had to apply lots of defensive pressure up the court and we were able to pick up a couple of turnovers there,” Dartmoor coach Leesa Logan said.

Cavendish settled into the match in the second term and found some rhythm piling on 17 goals while the Giants recorded 14 to maintain a three-goal lead.

Dartmoor managed to capitalise through their midcourt pressure with Bec Vankalken leading the charge in the third term.

“Bec is just guaranteed to come and perform and do what we need her to do,” Logan said.

“She helps lift the team out there and provides so much connection down the court.”

It was an evenly fought fourth quarter battle with Cavendish’s Marni Luhrs continuing to dominate in the circle despite some tough pressure from Giants’ defenders Charlotte Rice and Keely Price.

Dartmoor managed to push the game out an maintain a four-goal lead to take the four points.

“I am so stoked and so happy with the girls, it was a really good game,” Logan said.

“We got the jump on them early and I think we were all a bit stunned.

“We let them get back into the game through the middle so I think we were a bit disappointed by that but they didn’t drop their heads and persisted all game.

“After the game I think most of the girls got in their heads that they can actually do this and that they are definitely in the mix, it’s built a bit of belief in the group.”

Roos overcome Coleraine

Westerns managed to keep an oncoming Coleraine at bay on Saturday to claim a 48-40 victory.

The Roos jumped out to a six-goal lead in the first term but Coleraine stemmed the flow in the second to match Westerns’ scoring output.

A solid third quarter from Westerns allowed them to blow the scoreline out with their defensive unit capitalising on rebounds to allow them to push the margin out to 12 goals.

Coleraine didn’t let up in the fourth term, winning some ball back through the middle to limit Westerns to seven goals and execute 11 of their own.

Despite a strong finish from Coleraine, Westerns maintained their composure to keep the margin at eight and run out the game.

Darras perform against Saints

Tyrendarra managed a solid four quarters on Saturday to defeat Branxholme-Wallacedale 88-24.

It was an impressive first half from the Darras who worked the ball efficiently to post with Eliza Alexander slotting 16 in the first term alongside Hannah Van Gemst who recorded 12.

Some shifts from the Saints saw their attacking circle open up with Karoraina Karatau-Keightley showing exciting form under post.

The Saints managed to stem some of Tyrendarra’s flow down court but the Darras were able to take a 48-12 lead into half time.

Some big changes from both sides in the second half saw Taya Roberts shift into Tyrendarra’s attacking circle with both sides executing under post.

With some injuries in the last term for the Saints the Darras managed to run out the game on top.
