Big scores despite wet weather in South West

THE South West District Netball League played out their ninth round on Saturday with wet weather hitting across the board for the three A grade match ups.

There were some big wins across the league with Tyrendarra, Coleraine and Westerns earning another four points to kick off the back half of the season.

The Darras came up against third-placed Cavendish and managed to get an early jump in the game to carry across the four quarters to win 65-45.

With some early pressure and follow up on loose balls Tyrendarra edged ahead in the first quarter, converting on their turnover opportunities to lead by 10 goals at the break.

Cavendish settled into the second term with Marni Luhrs leading the charge in attack to convert centre passes and reduce error across the court.

Tyrendarra took a 13-goal lead into the third term and continued to build with pressure through the midcourt from Ella Smith and Ebony Stiles creating intercept opportunities in Cavendish’s attacking third.

Hannah Van Gemst and Eliza Alexander were steady in the Darras attacking end with the vision from Stiles and Taya Roberts allowing easy conversion.

Cavendish hit back in the final term and kept their pressure on through the middle to win back some ball and keep the scores level in the last quarter.

The Bloods still sit one win ahead of fourth and fifth placed Coleraine and Westerns while the Darras are on top of the ladder.

Westerns hold off Heywood

Despite some impressive play from Heywood, Westerns managed to secure another four points for the ladder with a 51-37 win on Saturday.

The Lions are yet to win a game this season but had a strong first half against the Roos, staying within seven goals at half time.

Heywood continued to keep the contest within reach, drawing back the margin by one goals after the third term but a dominant fourth quarter from Westerns shut the Lions out of the match.

Ruby Church was a strong target under post for Westerns, converting well under pressure from Heywood defenders.

Coleraine continue strong performances

Coleraine has been a solid force in the A grade competition so far this season, continuing their run of impressive performances with a 63-19 win against Branxholme-Wallacedale on Saturday.

The Maroons ability to suffocate play down court has seen them be a defensive force this season and with multiple attacking options they have been able to convert turnover opportunity.

The Saints had a solid second half but with Coleraine’s early 28-9 lead at half time, Branxholme-Wallacedale struggled to stay in the contest.
