COLERAINE took it to South West District Netball League ladder leaders Tyrendarra on Saturday despite going down by 10 goals in round 10 of the A grade competition.
It was a back-and-forth contest across the board with Tyrendarra gaining an early lead shortly after the first centre pass before Coleraine hit back in the second quarter.
In the second term the Maroons were out in force with their defensive pressure across the court forcing errors and seeing them gain a two-goal lead.
Tyrendarra managed to settle at the end of the second quarter to regain the lead 26-21.
The Darras found more space in the third quarter and improved their transition down the court with defenders Andrea Smith and Matilda Hutchison winning back plenty of ball.
Despite Tyrendarra holding a 12-goal lead heading into the final quarter, Coleraine continued to lift once again, with Maddison Kaine finding ample space in wing attack to deliver strong passes into shooters Holly Langley and Amy Lewis.
The Maroons found another gear at the end of the final term and managed to win the last quarter, which coach Casey Pye says they’ll take plenty away from.
“It was really good; we had the goal of keeping it under 10 so it was 10 in the end – we just wanted to have a really good hit out,” she said.
“We haven’t had a fit full team so it’s nice to just get everyone together again.
“It was fast paced and intense, the intensity from both teams was high which we haven’t had for a while so that was great for us.
“I was really happy with Chloe (Langley) in the centre and Jess Marshall in wing defence - at the start did really well and played her role.
“We’re just working on our process and trusting the process that it will come off – we’re playing a little differently to what we have in previous years and it’s just getting the girls to trust that when we do it, it will work. We’ll make a few mistakes but as long as we build and keep working on it, we’ll get there.”
Giants out in force
Dartmoor had a huge win against Branxholme-Wallacedale on Saturday, 71-31.
The Giants have been on the hunt for some solid performances and were able to produce and impressive four quarters on Saturday.
The side welcomed back Mikayla Rice who has been out due to injury, and she was a clear target in the circle for Dartmoor.
The Saints have also lifted their scoring rate from the start of the season with the services of experienced shooter Crystal Tonissen adding to the depth of their side.
Heywood challenge Cavendish
Heywood put in a big case for their improvement across the season, going down to strong finals contenders Cavendish 58-49.
The Lions are yet to win a game this season but managed to stick with the Bloods for four quarters, recovering after a big first quarter from Cavendish.
The Bloods came out firing to lead 19-9 after the first term but Heywood clawed their way back into the contest and with a dominant last quarter closed the margin.
Despite their efforts it wasn’t enough to get over the line with Cavendish showing their class to run out winners.
