THE South West District Netball League has closed its home and away rounds with some resounding wins across the weekend.
Tyrendarra has finished in top spot on the ladder, closing out the 16th round with a win against Cavendish, 58-43.
While it was a 15-goal win for Tyrendarra, the Bloods showed plenty of strong passages of play particularly in the third quarter where they drew the margin back to eight goals.
Both attacking thirds showed some quality ball movement while the Darras were able to capitalise on turnover ball effectively.
“It was a really good hit out for both sides I think, we managed to start really well then they matched us for the rest of the contest,” co-coach Hannah Van Gemst said.
“There are some things we're really happy with that we're executing on court, our transition has really lifted and the work in our attacking third, but there is still a lot of play we want to polish heading into finals.”
It was a quality battle in Cavendish’s attacking third with stalwarts Marni Luhrs and Carly Behncke connecting well despite consistent pressure from Tyrendarra’s defenders.
“Our defenders worked really hard today - we know Marni and Carly are really experienced shooters and when they find that connection it's impressive to watch and you don't get much opportunity to get hand to ball, but I feel like Andrea (Smith) and Matilda (Hutchison) built into each quarter and turned over ball when the opportunity was there,” Van Gemst said.
“That turnover rate also comes from the work of our mids too and making sure they're giving our defenders a chance to set up.
“The attack end is also building, we've got Eliza (Alexander) in there playing a bit of a general’s role and Taya (Roberts) has been producing some exciting netball out front.”
The Darras will have a week off while Cavendish will take on Dartmoor in the qualifying final next week.
“It's nice to finish the home and away season strong, but we know our work rate needs to lift again heading into finals so we took a minute to acknowledge a good season so far but we've got much more work to do now,” Van Gemst said.
Coleraine execute against Saints
Coleraine will take plenty of confidence into next week’s elimination final after finishing off their home and away rounds with a convincing 70-39 win against Branxholme-Wallacedale.
The Maroons have had some up and down results in the back half of the season but pushed for a quality four quarters on Saturday against an improved Saints outfit.
Coleraine’s midcourt was firing across the game with Chloe Langley and Maddison Kaine combining strongly out front to bypass the Saints defensive set up.
While Saturday’s game has bought and end to Branxholme-Wallacedale’s season, they will take plenty of positives from the year after breaking a two-year winning drought to record double victories this season.
Coleraine is scheduled to take on Westerns in the elimination final next Sunday.
Westerns produce quality against Lions
Westerns displayed an impressive four quarters of netball on Saturday, defeating Heywood 66-37, with dominant first and fourth quarters.
The Roos executed across the court and were able to shut down Heywood’s attacking play, particularly early, to hold a 20-5 lead after the first term.
Brooke Polaski was a standout performer in attack for Westerns, combining with both Ruby Church and Sienna Stone in the circle.
Rachael Gleeson also provided crucial turnovers for the Roos both in defence and throughout the midcourt.
Heywood pushed to find some form through their different attacking options but struggled to close the margin.
It is the Lions finals A grade game for the 2023 season, and despite a winless record, they will take confidence in being able to bring some quality juniors through the top ranks in preparation for next year.
