Positive results for Tigers

PORTLAND’S netball sides won three out of their six games on the weekend when they faced Camperdown in round 16 of the Hampden Netball League.

The Tigers won their division one, division two and 17-and-under match ups and went down by a slim margin in their Open grade clash.

The 43-36 loss came from a fourth-quarter surge from Camperdown, with the Tigers leading at every break.

While it was a disappointing result there were some positive showings across the board including a step up from young player Millie Ferguson who combined with Heidi Jones in the goal circle throughout the contest.

“We were all a bit disappointed after the game. We lead at every change but fell away in the last quarter,” co-coach Ellen Zeunert said.

“Having said that…there were a lot of positives to take, we have been able to give quite a number of players exposure to Open competition which is a big step.

“Young Millie Ferguson played her first full game at GS alongside Heidi in goals and made the most of the opportunity. She showed a lot of maturity and division two player Jasper Smith has been helping us out all season and started at WD, she’s another player who has really developed her game.”

Across the court there were some strong performances with stalwart players providing plenty of options.

“Maddie (Stone) played her best game of the year at GD and worked tirelessly every quarter. She’s deceptively quick and has had a really great season,” Zeunert said.

“Katie (Zeunert) ran through centre court and really stood up in attack and got a lot of hands to ball defensively. We started Remy at WA, she’s such an experienced player, and her timing and ball placement is a real advantage in our goal third.”

Adding to the depth of the group was Karina Thorpe for her third game with the Tigers but after struggling to close out the match, Portland was able to draw on their depth.

“We had Karina come from Melbourne to help out at GK but unfortunately she left the court at half time unwell so we brought another two division one players on,” Zeunert said.

“Charley Sampson on at GK and Sarah Tunstall on at WD….so all in all we have been able to expose a lot of new talent to the Open competition which is a really positive thing for the club moving forward.”

• Portland closed out their division one contest with a huge win against Camperdown, 57-25.

It was a consistent four quarters from the division one team, posting a huge lead early and making plenty of rotations across the match.

Casey Anson was a standout for the side with her experience in the defensive circle alongside Samantha Telfer and Tayla Telfer.

The division two team also had a big win, 58-23, with dominant shooter Tamika Holt standing up once again.

The division three side went down in a 45-11 loss.

• Two junior clashes were played throughout the day with the 17-and-under side showing strong improvement defeating Camperdown, 50-26.

The 15-and-under side had a tough match up going down 35-25.

The Tigers lost the 13-and-under game via forfeit.
